I had to put my angel to sleep today, she was 18y/o and had terrible arthritis.Today she couldn't get up,and when I looked into her face I could dee how much pain she was in.My wife and I took her to the vet and he agreed that euthanasia would be the best thing we can do for her.So we laid her on the table and put her favorite pillow under her head, telling her what a good girl she was. When the vet gave her the shot she was so brave, didn't even whimper. She looked me in the face and I could see the relief in her eyes. Right before she passed she kissed my wife, then me on the chin.I know it was for the best, but it hit me so hard.My wife got me Lady(my dog's name) on our first anniversary and she has been our baby for the last 18 years.I didn't want to cry in front of her,I didn't want her to feel anything but my love, but as soon as her eyes closed I was sobbing.Has anyone else ever felt so lost after losing their pet?Any suggestions on how to make myself face the day without my angel?

I'm SO sorry for your loss. That has to be the hardest thing ever in the whole, wide world. She probably thanks you though because she was tired.

I'm so sorry for your loss. (tears streaming down my face, because I know the pain of losing a pet very well) You're going to feel lost for quite awhile. You'll find yourself okay sometimes and then will burst into tears the next moment. The most I can say is to just embrace the moments....both the good and the bad. Try to remember the good times you had with her and occupy your mind with things to keep yourself busy. Maybe to honor her you could volunteer to walk some of the dogs at your local pet shelter. Eventually you are going to want a new baby, but your heart will tell you when it's time. My heart goes out to you and your wife.

Sorry you lost your beloved friend. I know it is hard. It is losing a loved member of your family. Give into your grief and give your self time to get past these difficult times. Just like with a human loved one that passes, think of all the good times you have had with her and all the joy she has brought into your life. You did the right thing because she could no longer enjoy her life and do the things that she loved to do. Perhaps after awhile you will want to get another pet (not to replace Lady or to take her place). Just because you love animals and feel the need to give that love to another pet. Hold Lady in your heart always and if you believe as I do, you will hold her in your arms again sometime in the future. Good luck to you and God bless you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I found my first dog Bonnie, dead in her cage when I was in 4th grade. We bred her and got one of her grand pups. I had to put my 13 yr old beagle to sleep on this past valentines day. I had her since I was in 5th grade. She had breast cancer that went all the way into her ovaries and bladder. She had a tumor that could not be removed. She couldn't suffer anymore. It was that same look, Laying on the table licking your face, looking at me, my mom and dad. She knew, and she her look said, its okay, everything will be okay. I couldn't stay in the room when they gave her the shot. My dad did. I had to see her alive. I couldn't bare the image of her not being my fat happy beagle. I had never seen my dad cry until that day. I miss my Babe, all the time I miss her. I finally bought another puppy yesterday. We took him to the vet and he has a heart murmur. Some days you just have to sit and ask yourself, why me? Why my family? I wish you all the luck in the world!

That's so hard to do. I've had to make that decision several times, and it's never easy, but it's always the right one. The final compassionate act you can perform is to release them from suffering when their quality of life has become so poor. Allow yourself to grieve, but take joy in the years you had with her. Some day, when you're ready, another angel will come into your life, if you're open to the possibility.

Just remember you gave your pet a good home for however long that pet's life was.
If it wasn't for you, she could have had a much sadder existance.
You gave her a good life from the moment she came into your life, till the moment you made the last selfless act of sacrifice for your pet.
She'll always be thankful to you for that.
I've gone through the loss more than once... so I understand.
I'm sorry for your loss.
in time you'll learn to remember the good times, and not the moment you lost her. While it will still hurt, eventually you'll be able to open up your heart again to save another animal who may need you, as a testimony to how much your loved one changed your life.
best of luck to you.

I know how you feel. Last September we had to put our 10 year old toy poodle that we had since he was a puppy down. Its been a year and still I find myself missing him. It takes a lot to get over, but what you can do is wake up and tell yourself everyday that its better she was put down because now she can run around and be happy and that one day you will be with her agan.

Oops kind of nearly cried reading that. It will get easier with time, but you did what was best for her. Remember that and the the wonderful 18 years you had with her.

Yes, I had to put my dog down a couple months ago. The only thing you can to is relize you did the best thing for them. And it would be worse if you selfishly kept them suffering for your happiness.
