It amazes me how careless Americans can be with their own people. Health care for most Americans even those with some health care coverage sucks. And yet, we allow Conservative-created fear about "communism" and "socialism" and "long lines"cloud the fact millions of Americans don't have health coverage. Of course we have shorter wait times than other countries---45 million people aren't in line. You know where they are---in the emergency room b/c they could afford checkups and meds. We can't even get coverage for all kids!!!!

I've seen ridiculous amounts of propaganda on here against 'communist' health care. It's working for pretty much every other first world country out there, and I definitely do not see those people complain at the level that Americans complain about their health care.

Not to mention that health benefits for everyone would free up emergency rooms. In addition it improves the health of the country as a whole, which improves the economy as well.

One can study a number of government run systems in any Western European country and Canada. Those are models that have successfully been working for years, and despite what the propaganda here says, their citizens would never trade our system for yours.

I am part of those 45 million.. You know what, I'm better off for it. I see a doctor on average about every 2 years for a checkup, which costs less than the cheapest health insurance for a given month.

Multiply that cost by 2-10x for the government being involved and I'm many times better off by not paying an insurance premium to the government, for other than Medicare and Social Security anyway, which already runs at 30+% of income (half you pay, half your employer pays). That employer part could be more money in your paycheck or less cost for goods you purchase.

In other words, even if you're in the 15% Federal Income Tax bracket, you're paying 45+% of your income to the federal government, plus what you're paying your state, and possibly also your city and county.

You want to add to that? Government is incredibly inefficient in financing expenditures.

Living in canada with our socialist/communist/evil health care system, I love to read the people who are against it because they believe the hype of the HMO's, insurance companies, private hospitals who would lose serious millions if the US developed a sustainable public health care system. Not to mention the propaganda from those groups who try to discredit public health care as some kind of socialist treachery. I get taxed, can become ill, walk in to my ER/walk-in clinic/family physicains office and afterwards do not receive a bill. The only people that are profiting off of private health care are the HMO/insurance companies and the like. The only reason that Canada's health care system has deteriorated is by deception by our own government who are only playing with time until they can become CEO's, or VP[s of these very same companies who want to make a nice million bucks. Canada's top bearaucrats and politico's are selling their own people out. The American public is a bunch of suckers (no offense of course), con men would call you all a Mark or patsy would you not. Oh oh, the gestapo is at my door, i have to show them my papers. I guess the americans were right after all. You'd better stay with your private ?health? care.

I am lucky enough to work for a company that only asks its employees to contribute 2% of their income toward their health care costs. However, I know people who run their own businesses and cannot afford health care for their families. I do not take my health care coverage for granted and do not think that anyone should be denied coverage for choosing to help the US economy by running a small business.

why is the fear of communism and socialism not legitimate? you want universal health care(uhc), that's socialism! plain and simple. however, there's no where near that many people who want health care but can't get it. that 40some million number includes illegal immigrants, and a great number of people who don't have coverage because they choose not to have it, not because they can't afford it. you're falling for the scare tactics of those who push for uhc. and don't forget, nearly everything the government does, it does ineffectively. it will run health care ineffectively as well. canada, britain, and others are having tons of problems with their systems, which were implemented by scaring the public regarding "people without healthcare", and promising things socialism is unable to deliver.

Well... people fear a socialist mindset. Take for example France, which during the 2003 heat wave left their parents and senior citizens in the care of the state while they went on vacation. An estimated 14,802 people elderly people died under state care. They had to load coffins out into the Tuileries. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_European_heat_wave

Or look at the the UK, where socialized medicine is also quite prevelant. Two articles in the past two weeks are quite 'strange'.

One is the rise of 'do it yourself' dentisty. Where people pull their own teeth because the national health system cannot cover it. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/7045263.stm

And look at the BBC article on the fact that more midwives are needed because hospitals are too busy to deliver babies.
See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7033658.stm and http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jennifer-block/childbirth-in-england-i_b_68454.html titled "Childbirth in England - It's Shocking!".

So far... socialized medical care looks dismal compared to what we have.

I foresee the "universal healthcare" as messy and unfair as the welfare system and all other government financial aids. Those who doesn't work, mostly because: "they do much more money on government aids than working", and, as a consequence, don't pay any taxes, are the only ones benefiting from it. While the ones who work their a*** off, and pay taxes, will not be able to get any benefits.

Any kind of government aid should benefit the people who need it at the moment they need it, but must never, ever, be a way of life at the expense of the tax payers.

I have health care, and the problem I have with universal health care is, not only will I have mine to continue paying for, but more of my taxes will be taken out to pay for someone else's. I feel sorry for people who will get government assisted care if this is to pass. It will be like dealing with the DMV for medical issues. Just tell me what government sponsored program is not a hassle to deal with. What makes you think this one will be any different?

All of the left wing slugs keep whining for "universal health care". "Universal health care" is a euphemism for socialized medicine. Get a life, you slug. Then get a job. A job that provides medical and dental insurance. The taxpayers don't want to subsidize your lamer a ss, by providing you with government dispensed compassion in the form of health care, food stamps, welfare, heat in the winter time, or any of the other asinine government social engineering . Work for what you get, work for what you want, work for what you need, like the rest of us. Thank you.

I like it, but only together with free car, house, and golf club membership. Also I 'd like to have 2 vacations every year.
When your great-great-parents came to this country thru Ellis Island, did they ask Uncle Sam give them medical insurance, or apartment,or anything else for that matter?
Hell, NO.
They worked their *** OFF to make a living, support families. When WWII came, they stepped forward, while our grandmothers worked on factories to produce goods.
Now, we have a generation of people who are willing to stay with hand forward and ask Government to give.
Yes, everybody must have medical insurance, but do not expect Government to give you for nothing.
Somebody has to pay.

If you want something, work for that, as we all do.
