i was put under with the IV as well, and basically there's two parts to this.
the before: which involves the doctor telling you about the procedure, then giving you the IV to put you to sleep (i cried then, and not because it hurt or anything, just because i'm a big pansy and i'm scared of needles) they have you count backwards from ten, and i think you make it to about seven before you're completely conked out.
and then there's the after: you wake up a little sore, confused, and super thirsty. a nurse leads you to another room where you rest a minute until someone drives you home (cause trust me, you can't drive yourself)
i honestly have no idea how long the procedure lasted, but it's not too long. you're pretty much still in a daze when you wake up, and then you just head home and sleep for a few hours. you keep bleeding for a while, but you just change the gauze when it gets too bloody.
it sounds and looks awful, but if you take it easy (and DON'T drink out of straws) you'll be fine.

RE:
wisdom teeth & iv sedation?
Tomorrow I'm getting all 4 wisdom teeth removed. Top 2 are not impacted, and only 1 has partially errupted. Bottom 2 are very impacted, 1 being extremely close to a nerve. Would be nice to know what to expect during this procedure. Am told I will be sedated via IV. How long does this sort...

I'm going to answer this 2 ways. First, I've had IV/sedation as a patient. I didn't take any Valium and I remember everything, but didn't care. I wasn't given a lot of medicine because I wasn't very nervous. A 30 min procedure only felt like 5. I heard them talking, but don't really remember about what. Here's your second answer: I work for an oral surgeon, patients like you who are REAL scared usually take a lot more IV meds to relax. The calmer you are, the better it works. Take your Valium, get a good nights sleep and try to stay calm. Remember, we do this all day long. Be honest with your surgeon before the procedure and let them know if you are a wreck, or just a little anxious. Tell them that you would rather be a little more sleepy. All this will help them decide just how to treat you. Good luck!

I just had this done this morning. My oral surgeon gave me laughing gas and then proceded to put the IV in. I was loopy from the laughing gas but remember feeling awesome and so relaxed. The IV sedation was amazing. I remember the doctor putting drugs in the IV and then I remember waking up. I am also one of those people that does not like any dental procedures and the sedation was awesome. I remember nothing about the extraction and did not experience any pain.... until I got home. I hope that you are able to fall asleep and remember nothing because that was the easiest procedure ever. They wheeled me out to the car and I barely remember getting home. I was up until the bleeding stopped so I could take the gauze out, then I slept for a couple hours after. Good luck!

When I got my wisdom teeth out I was worried too but it was a breeze. Really, they put in the IV, I fell asleep and when I woke up I was wide awake, not too fuzzy headed and smiling. The recovery took a few weeks but I was in no pain and I relaxed and ate lots of mashes potatoes. I've heard what it's like to not be sedated and I was glad I was out for it.
What's it like?
You're only out for a half hour or so, but it will only feel like a second to you. You'll wake up with some cotton where the teeth were but you won't be in any pain. Whoever drives you home will pick up your antibiotics and take you home and you get to relax. I took one advil once and that was it. No big deal, truly not a bad experience for me at all. The dentist said to me "if you fall asleep smiling you will wake up smiling" and I did. You'll see, it will be easier than you think. Good Luck
P.S. My teeth were impacted too and it was still that easy for me.

I had the same thing done about 5 years ago. If I remember correctly it took about an hour but due to the sedation, it felt less than that. Mine went pretty good. You just have to follow the post-op instructions to make sure you don't get a dry socket which is extremely painful sometimes causing the doctor to have to go back in.

I had all four done at once, too,and they were impacted. I just remembered getting knocked out and that was that. The anesthesia made me really sick, however, when I tried moving around the first day. I threw up, but that was probably because of motion sickness, because when I lied down, I was okay. In pain, but okay. Just relax and everything should be fine.

You'll be out like a light! It might take an hour, but you won't even know. I was doped up and stayed doped up for about a week. All 4 of mine were like on their sides.
