then you can just make sure that you yourself marry someone of the opposite gender? You don't have to make a big deal or a law out of it. You can just marry someone of the opposite gender. If your church doesn't like gay marriage, fine, don't allow them to be married in your church. That's your religious right, but you don't have to make a law that says that no one else can marry homosexuals.
I mean, if you want to make laws based on your religious beliefs, (especially ones that you say you're freed from) do you realize what kind of country you would create? Would you want to have to live by a Kosher diet? How about no one and no thing working on the Sabbath?
Wouldn't it be better to just practice what you believe personally, instead of making everyone else subject to religious belief? After all, it isn't like you all agree on what your god wants anyway (examples, do you have to speak in tongues to have the holy spirit? Do you have to be baptized? Can you divorce?).

In other words, keep your faith personal, and not project it onto others?

Doug, do you have any clue how many things you do in day to day life are considered abominations unto the lord? Here, http://bibleresources.bible.com/keywordsearchresults.php?keyword=abomination&multiplemethod=all&version1=9&numpageresults=25&sortorder=bookorder straight from the KJV, so you can't say it's unbiblical. Go down the list and see how many abominations you commit, then tell me why your abominations are any less damning than homosexuality.

OK so someone on here said if the law has always worked why change it, I would like to point out that the law has always been against same sex marriage.
I would also like to point out that traditionally marriage has been a religious thing, only recently has it become a government thing.
Also in most of the states the law is that same sex marriage is illegal.
Here is the legal definition of Marriage:
MARRIAGE - A contract made in due form of law, by which a free man and a free woman reciprocally engage to live with each other during their joint lives, in the union which ought io exist between husband and wife. By the terms freeman and free-woman in this definition are meant, not only that they are free and not slaves, but also that they are clear of all bars to a lawful marriage.
This clearly states men cannot marry men and women cannot marry women, I don't see what your saying about pressing our religious beliefs on everybody else, these are ALREADY the rules.
I just wanted to state a few facts I in no way am for gay slandering and am in no way for violence against gays.
By the way, I do keep a kosher diet (and I'm not jewish I'm christian)

I mean, if you want to make laws based on your religious beliefs, (especially ones that you say you're freed from) do you realize what kind of country you would create?
What kind of societies does the influence of christian mentality have on us today
... lets look at some of the laws we live with
Laws against drugs
Laws against alcohol (prohibition was a failure.. thank goodness)
Laws against cigarettes that are just beginning..
Laws that take away our rights to decide for ourselves what we consume... the propaganda served to promote these ideologies are exactly the same used to promote religion.
I use these examples because although we don't see it these things are used as self medication .... but governments today have the same mentality as religions It says in their laws that we can't self medicate... They constantly promote that a doctor has the capacity of better determining your choices regarding your personal physical well being... Natural remedies have been scoffed at to the point where they made it illegal for teas to advertise what ailments they can help sooth... without all the perscription drug side effects... This is what I call the religification of science... How is it like a religion... it give doctors an unfair and unnatural advantage over our bodies.... it's a means of handing over artificial authority over our beings to doctors just as religions have done for priest.... and just like priests doctors have long stopped listening to the patients regarding their health and complaints.. they simply assume because they have "papers" that they know better and stop learning, stop caring and so on...
the religification of insurance companies and the laws that support them... why do we have to wear seat belts... We should determine the risk we are willing to take with or without them... not only does this law become a cash cow for the government but also becomes a loop hole for the insurance company to deny claims.. which means they get paid wether they provide a service or not.. just like religions.. and the religious mentality designed governments... further more the governments make insurance law.. which is the religification of money... you need car insurance.. you need house insurance... there are solutions to all these inequities in societies.. but the religious mentality is so great that the red tape just keeps growing and growing... Just like religions... they don't want practicle solutions based on common sense.. they just keep making impracticle laws that keep the power for some that keep thinking the same way... I have so many examples that I can babble all day.. so I leave you with just these...
You might think that today isn't so bad... look at the violence.. the squandered resources... the inability to get justice... the over all inequity... pointing the finger at others to avoid taking responsibility... the over all acceptance that politicians lie... the disrespect of the environment.. the need to fight tooth and nail to change one bad law (and there are so many bad laws still being written) the religious -especially christian influence in north america is going to be our undoing if we don't stop them from interfering today...
the goals of society should be to encourage self responsibility and self authority and not to control the massed by giving someone else authority over our choices.. less laws.... I'm not talking about laws protecting us against violence.. although I think there are far more practicle ways of dealing with these as well that our laws don't allow.. and certain laws that protect children... but not those that take a way a person's right to raise their children. (that's what the laws of formal education do) but less laws can bring better order...

Christians have nothing to do but worry about what others do.Look at all the things they give high priority to in politics that have no affect on them what so ever. Most will not vote for a pro choice or a gay marriage supporter for any reason.Heck I have a real estate developer on my city counsel that won because he sided with the Christians. my city is way over developed but this guy won because he played to the Christians on things that aren't even in his realm of responsibility. The other candidate wanted to slow growth, reduce taxes, and improve improve infrastructure,He had a platform that covered the responsibility's of the position he was running for. The guy that won is all against gay marriage and abortion and he can't do anything about those things

Marriage was instituted by God for a dignified and particular high purpose.
Anything else is NOT marriage.
Anything else demeans humanity and society in general.
There are certain lines that no one may cross.
This is one of them.
Any attempt to normalize abominable, seriously disordered behavior like homosexuality should be resisted by Christians and others of all faiths, at all costs.

You should tell that to the outspoken part of the gay community pushing their beliefs down city streets with gay pride parades, or something hitting more to home for Californians at least, and the country is probably well on it's way, with Gov. Arnold passing a law that has now banned the words "Mom and dad" together, as well as "husband and wife" in schools so as not to offend the gay community, as well as many other things under this bill that advocate gay rights, but also shove it into the school systems.
How can we not speak out about it, when it's being shoved down our throats by the government. It's the same situation as atheists and those who would choose to shove their beliefs down the atheists throats. No body likes it, and yet it's happening.
Yes this is a Christian website, but I urge you to at least read the article.

Personally, I don't mind the gay community as long as things aren't being shoved down mine or anyone elses throats. I have friends that are gay and we get along just fine. They know my beliefs, and I know who they are as people.

The problem I have with this is that it's "normalized" and will be taught as normal in schools where my kids go. It makes it hard to keep my beliefs personal, when other's beliefs will be able to be taught in school, but Christian beliefs are not allowed.
Should I not draw the line somewhere?

Marrying is a religious practice and is considered a union between a man and a woman for procreation. It is only in recent years that it has been aberrated into whatever the hell people want it to mean.
Churches recognize this. You don't

That's exactly what I've been saying. But a lot of these bigots think their opinion is the only opinion that matters. They're hypocrites because they are against things that don't affect them, but they wouldn't try to make divorce illegal because half of them are probably working on their second and third divorce.
