go to court and get a new birth certificate issued. it's the only legal way to do it.

Under what circumstances.
For performance purposes, you can simply start using another name and register it with Doing Business As (DBA) at the country level.
For almost anything else, you have to petition a court for a name change. Except, of course, for marriage, where it gets changed in the process.

If the father has no objection then go to the court house and have it changed. It is a very simple process. I would make sure the father has no objections firth though because it can cause major problems if he does. You may also need written consent from him to make the change. (This is assuming the father is not dead.) I know I can't change my sons last name until he turns 18, because his father put it in the divorce papers.
