This is some lame thing that NASCAR came up with for the truck in the beginning of there series. Then they moved it to the cup series because all the mindless non experienced race fans couldn't understand that if the couldn't red flag a race to clean off the track after a wreck so that they could have a lap to come into the pits and then the G,W Checker then that was the end of the race once they reached the distance end of the race.
Now they will run past the announced distance just so the children viewers get to see a racing checkered flag end. This is a very poor rule change that should not be allowed in a professional type series suck as NASCAR. This is more like a circus rule or maybe an all star race not a pro race re-ruled for the mindless know it all.
NASCAR can't be trusted on there yellow's (caution flags) either so it really makes this rule a NBA fixing situation.

One time in Talledega Jeff Gordon won the race under caution, and the grandstand almost turned into a riot. The problem was that Dale Jr was just about to pass him, when the caution came out and the field was frozen. Thus, Jr was going to win the race. NASCAR then borrowed an idea from the truck series, that a race should never end under caution. So whenever a caution comes out at the end of the race and the clean-up will take more laps than scheduled, they will have a three lap shootout - Green Flag, White Flag, Checker Flag. Some compare it to overtime in other sports.
They only get one chance to pull this off. If there is another crash before the checker, the race is over. Also if the crash occurs after the white flag, the race is over. I'm a big fan of the rule. I hate seeing a race finish under yellow. This is one rule change that NASCAR got right.

It isn't the last three laps.....it's the last two, so it must not be very self explanatory. The green flag waves on the restart, the white on the following lap, and then the checkered flag. It's NASCAR's version of overtime, and it insures that the fans get the best possible chance to see a finish under green. As stated by several above, this rule came into existence after a Gordon win under caution at Talladega several years ago.
What was ironic about that win.....was that if the idiot fans hadn't thrown out so much trash onto the track NASCAR would have been able to restart the race.

A green white checkered flag finish is Nascars attempt to finish the race after a caution with only a few laps to go. They go green for one lap, then they get the white flag, then they get the checkered flag. So basically it is 3 laps at the end of a race when caution comes out late. For example look at last weeks race, caution came out with a few laps to go and they put 6 laps on the clock and they went 3 laps under caution while the track was being cleaned up, then they went green, white, checkered.

...A green and white checkered finish is an attempt by Nascar to allow a race to be finished by actual racing than under caution.
...The rule came about because of a controversial win by Jeff Gordon a few years back at Talladega I believe. What happened was Gordon was in the lead and Dale Jr was in the process of making a pass and would have won the race.
...Just before Jr completed the pass Brian Vickers (who at the time was Jeff Gordon's team mate) mysteriously spun out for no reason at all bringing out a caution. Nascar immediately threw a caution.
...Dale Jr would have passed him and won the race but because of a previous new rule that when a caution came out the field is frozen. That immediately gave Jeff Gordon the win with only a few laps to go.
...There was such a large number of fans that were disappointed that they began to throw thousands of objects on to the track (at Jeff Gordon's car) as a way of voicing their disapproval of how Jeff won the race (caused by his teammate's spin).
...Nascar knew they had to do something to help protect the drivers from such large scale disapproval so they made a rule. They wanted to allow the fans to have the chance to see their driver win by racing and not by a caution.
...The rule allows one lap of green flag racing and then one more lap of white flag racing (last lap) to bring the drivers to the checker flag (the finish).

because there's a caution they sparkling the debris and then the starting up to race causing the race going into further time. So the race is going back to eco-friendly, and race a million eco-friendly lap, and then theirs the white flag, and then the checkers. the element is that if caution comes out before the checkers the race is immediately over and the fellow who's top-rated on the time of caution wins. many of the time the race ends less than eco-friendly yet this become only a style of uncommon races that the race ended less than caution yet that turned right into a very cool ruin.
