They are wanting to sell you a product - namely your credit score.

Don't fall for it. Pull your free copy of your credit REPORT at www.annualcreditreport.com once every four months. (One from each of the three CRA's every four months). Check it for errors or identity theft.

Pay ALL your bills on time, and stop borrowing money. Cut up your credit cards. Live on less than you make. Save money. Buy only what you can afford to pay for TODAY. Yes, that includes cars.

"But, if I don't have a good credit score, I can't get a house!"

Nonsense. You can get a house by doing the following, even with a credit score of ZERO!

* Pay your rent early or on time EVERY month for 2-3 years.
* Pay ALL your bills on time and don't bounce any checks.
* Keep your job for 2-3 years.
* Have $0 in debt, and 6-12 months of living expenses in a liquid savings account
* Save up a down payment of at LEAST 20%. The closer to 100% the better! This is in addition to the emergency fund above.
* Take a 15 year fixed rate mortgage with a payment that is NO MORE than 25% of your TAKE HOME pay, from a mortgage broker that does manual underwriting.

Those companies want to sell you a credit monitoring service for anywhere from $10 per month to $50 per month.
