I am going to become a paramedic and then a firefighter. Was wondering how much I can expect to make? How do raises work for fire fighters? Thanks.

The average yearly salary of firefighters in 2006 was $42,370, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Federal government workers earned less than those employed by local government.

Overtime pay is frequent because of the job’s unusual hours, and the benefits (including retirement) are excellent. By moving up the ranks, firefighters can command big salary increases.

Government economists expect jobs for firefighters to grow faster than the average for all careers through 2014. But most firefighters are volunteers, and there is always keen competition for paying jobs.

Once you’re hired, though, you probably don’t have to worry about being laid off. Fire protection is considered an essential service. Even when cities cut their budgets, it usually means less equipment, not fewer people.

I wish you the best of luck with this profession later in life. It takes a special person to do this work, just like a paramedic or police officer.

About $36,000 per year. Just a little further south they make $40 - $42K. That's here in northwest FL. Raises are usually by the way of a COLA and anniversary raise or increase. But it all varies by region. But just for the record, most of don't do it for the money anyway. The spirit of helping others out weighs any monetary compensation!
