I am a bit concerned as my friend has a male and female dog who are brother and sister. (Their mother is border collie-their father is staff/snauchzer) They mated and had 1 male and 2 females. They are healthy, but now one of the female pups is pregnant by the father or the brother. Will these pups survive and be healthy? What will their temperaments be like?
They all have sweet temperaments so far and respond with good intelligence.

It's done all the time in dog breeding. It's called either line-breeding or in-breeding depending on the circumstances. It can cause an exaggeration of genetic issues if one exists, but that is rare. It is a very common practice. That is how breeds were developed. The puppies will be fine.

Yes you can.. it's called Line Breeding. However, you need to make sure that you do genetic testing for defects as well as look at all faults in all bloodlines to make sure you are not doubling up on anything bad. It is a good way to go if you have a sound bloodline that you want to preserve while bringing in some new blood. Just make sure that the mated dogs also complement each other so that you get an improvement in the litter. Your goal is to have the next generation be better than the last in looks. Always should have good health and temperament no matter what the breed.

That's pretty sick by breeding brother-sister or father-daughter. Is your friend running a puppy mill producing poor quality puppies? No offense, but that's a big no-no on breeding. Although these puppies look healthy, you will never know what may happen in the future. These puppies may have genetic disorders when they get older.

I don't know if it's true in dogs or not, but in rabbits that type of inbreeding is fine unless it's more than 1 generation.....like example you breed brother to sister then breeding those puppies together is bad. if they are mutts to start with tho it's probably fine

No, it's just like with people-if that happens, they come out mentally retarded or deformed. That happened with these stray cats in my neighborhood, one of the female cats must have mated with a brother or her father, and all of her kittens only had one open eye---it's really gross. It might sound kind of funny, but if you can help it, don't let two animals that are closely related mate.

Inbreeding is like playing with fire- you're going to get burned... and the dogs will pay, not the irresponsible owner/"breeder". Tell your friend to abort the pregnancy and get the dogs neutered and spayed. Your friend is a backyard breeder and one of the biggest problems causing pet overpopulation and ruining the quality of breeds. So sad :(

Inbreeding is VERY dangerous - I wouldnt recommend you allowing the litter to be born...how old is the female pup who is pregnant? How do you know she is pregnant? and I would see a vet about your situation...this can not only be dangerous to the puppies but can also be dangerous to the Dog itself. I think this situation cries out for responsibility on the owners behalf...no offense...but keep a better eye on your dogs and have them fixed, especially when all the dogs in the household are realted.

There is no way of telling what they will look like or what their temperaments will be with that kind of a mix...

You need to have the whole lot spayed / neutered so this doesn't continue!

If she mated with the father, the puppies will be okay. This is called line breeding.

If she mated with the brother, there will more than likely be health problems.

I am a dog breeder and it is common to breed a puppy back to one of its parents.

Your friend is an idiot and is either the laziest dog owner on the planet, or they get off watching the dog "breed". Either way, cut them loose and STOP being friends wiht this kind of person.
