My dog delivered a single stillborn pup this afternoon. I found out there is a 2-week-old puppy near me whose mother has abandoned it, its owner is looking for a dog that will nurse it. I said they can bring the 2 week old here and see if my dog will adopt it or refuse it - what's the likelihood of this being successful vs. my dog attacking the puppy?

Thank you so much everyone! My dog met the puppy and got as far away from it as she could. She even looked scared! Definitely not a match. But it was worth a try, to be sure. Thanks again.

There's no good way to predict - depends on how much "mothering" instinct your dog has. All you can do is try and good luck.

It is VERY likely that she will gladly take to it....but don't force things. Lay the pup near her, and sit back and have a cup of tea. If you act like nothing is unusual, she will probably allow her nursing instinct to take over. If you fuss and TRY to make her adopt it, she will feel pressured, nervous and irritable, so let her decide for herself. If you still lhave her lifeless pup, rub the body on the new pup...I know it sounds horrific, but this is the way sheep farmers convince ewes to take on orphaned lambs.
Chances are, all will go perfectly smoothly.
Good luck =)

I have had amazing results getting females to accpet orphaned puppies. I even had a poodle that adopted a litter of kittens. You could try it and see how it goes. Have the owner of the other pup come over with the pup and both of you watch to make sure she doesn't reject it and try to hurt it. Good luck. Hope everything goes well.

Given that dogs have been known to nurse creatures other than dogs, I would think it might be successful. Couldn't hurt to try - just keep a close eye on the dogs when you introduce them.

it has happened before, a milking mother can adopt a pup that's not her own

but check above resources for help if you can't get her to accept the pup.

Also, talk to a vet as well

You should definitely try it. Just so long as you keep an eye on them, it should be okay.

as quickly as we've been given a pup (poppy) while our older canines (rosie) became right into a pair of million. on the initiating it took rosie a at the same time as to get used to her, we stored them aside at situations to offer her some area, yet we expected this via fact she doesnt generally like different canines so she ran away a super form of the time, this went on for approximately 3-4 weeks and we theory that rosie might in no way settle for the hot pup yet then sooner or later, as quickly as we had kinfolk around (surely discussing to offer poppy to them as their canines had died approximately six months returned) they only ran out to the returned backyard and commenced working around and enjoying at the same time, then they went interior and basically began drowsing at the same time. this became into the comparable tale as quickly as we've been given our 0.33 canines, jasper while rosie became into approximately 4, returned she didnt take to him ok, even although poppy did, yet she have been given drained in the previous he did so stored them separate on occasion while he wast drowsing, yet one time jasper began pulling on rosies ear and she or he regarded as much as us as though to assert 'while is he going returned?!' yet returned after some weeks, they only began to get alongside completely advantageous. you basically could desire to offer them time, and separation, yet ensure you in many situations supply the older canines interest in the previous the pup, and finally, as has befell with us, they are going to develop into inseperable!
