I think that you might give him a bear or a special toy that he could carry around when he feels uncomfortable. At first let him have both the pac. and the toy. Slowly start moving the pac. out of sight alittle at a time. Soon tell him the toy can go out with him but the pac. cannot. When he comes home let him have it for awhile, but soon replace it with the toy. When you ask him if he is hungry, wants to go for a walk, or go out and play, ask the toy, if it would like to do it also. Keep showing love even though it might drive you crazy. (bottle and pac.) The bottle at night put less in it and try to replace it also with the toy. ( this is why I was thinking a bear or dog, something soft.) Good Luck and congrat on your special treasure!!!!!

Not really knowing the background of the little tike, I would say start slow.
Limiting the bottle to bed time is a start. Don't take away anything. Let him think it is his choice. Let him pick between the pacifier and let's say a "big boy" toy like a train. Hopefully he'll choose the train. If not, then let me have his choice and see if there's something he will choose over the pacifier.
GOOD LUCK.

First thing get him into a sippy cup tell him how he is a big boy, don't give in he is big enough for a cup. Encourage him .Once you have made up your mind he will follow its not so much his insecurities as it is yours. Then after a week or so He wakes up and there is no pacifier it either disappears during the night or you could have it fly out the car window and there is no passy....He will adjust and be fine I promise.

i have a 3 year old adopted son as well, who still takes his sippy cup before he goes to bed. the sippy cup he takes to bed looks more like a bottle though. we just kept reducing the number of bottles a day, week, and so forth. my sister eliminated the binkie from my niece by telling her that the binkie fairy was coming to take her binkie. they tied the binkie in a tree and in the morning they replaced the binkie with a baby doll for her. she never asked for the binkie again. she was over 3 also. good luck to you. don't let pressure from others influence your parenting. i'm sure that he won't be walking down the aisle with a bottle.

Teeth DO NOT rot because of a pacifier. They rot because the parents don't take the time to brush the child's teeth properly. I know twins that are almost 5 years-old and their parents are in the middle of a nasty divorce and they still use their pacifiers and their teeth are just fine! How long has it been since he was adopted? If it was just recently let it go for now. Tell him when he goes to school that he cannot take them with him, but maybe take a small stuffed animal that will fit in his backpack for comfort. Just ripping it away from him will cause him more damage.

get rid of the bottle and fast teeth rotter especially giving him a drink at bed time from it so he will cry a few days but a kids teeth is more important than a whiny kid at night i had the same problem with my daughter her teeth started to rot because of it as for the pacifer let him keep that for now to help him through the night when you take his bottle away then interest him in something else like a blanket or a teddy and praise him when he doesnt have the dummy in his mouth

Don't push it. This is his coping mechanism. Talk to his pediatrician to see if it is something to be concerned about. As he becomes more secure in his new home, he may not feel the need for his pacifier/bottle.
