He is a very nervous cat and escapes all the time. I keep thinking he will run into the path of a car while scared of the noise. Or worse, yobs will tie a firework to him. What do I do?

You double-door him. Make sure he is in by dusk and put him in a comfortable space where you can close him behind a door. Then if the front or back doors to the house are opened by comings and goings he cannot get out.

If he escapes easily... don't let him move freely around your house... place him in a room with his litterbox, food, water and toys.

make sure the door and the windows are shut tight so he can't leave.

To keep him calm... just put him in the room a short time before the bonfire and take him out after the bonfire so he's not cooped up all night.

You can also talk to the vet about sedatives... but I don't recommend that unless he's in distress.

shut him a room at the back of the house for a few days before bonfire night. with his litter tray and feed him as normal.
please keep him shut in the room even if he escapes he can only escape into the rest of the house and get shut back in his room.
This is for his safety and your sanity. If all else fails your vet can proviide sedatives to calm him down. but you will have to be vigilant with him still.
I have 5 cats 1 of who goes out all the time. he is shut in the back bed room untill it is over the others are house cats anyway.eccept 2 who are 8 months old. I don't know what they are going to do.
you have to play it by ear. but do not let him out.

I know how u feel I hav a cat to who loves going outside and it is hard not to worry wen u have such cruel people out there, you can buy tablets from the vets that can keep them calm but these are quite expensive, you can also get a plug in that is meant to giv off a calming aroma for them, but that to is very expensive. the best thing to do is keep your cat in when its dark making sure that windows and doors are shut, hav a litter tray ready if your cat usually goes outside and if you go out leave the tv on or the radio so the bangs arent quite so scarey for it, this is the only way to keep your cat safe from getting hurt.

Confine him to one room for the duration of bonfire night. People with highly sensitive dogs do this on 4th of July, so their pets don't freak out, you can at least do that for your cat.

Whatever you do make sure you keep him indoors. If you have a cat flap can you make it lock or keep him away from the room with the flap in it. My cat used to think if he ran outside it would be safer but then he would hide under the bush and completeley flatten himself down and we had to drag him out. He was terrified. Your cat will be much safer indoors. Don't let him out however much he wants to go.

Build him a camp in the airing cupboard or under the stairs.

A nice cardboard box, padded out with his blanket and cushion (if he has such items) hidden away at the back, where only he can get to.. Make it now and introduce him to it so by the peak of the fireworks period, he knows where to hide.

Or another idea for a hiding place ; if you have drawers in the base of your bed, make him a camp there, blanket, your tee-shirt for comfort and he'll be fine

Oh and , he doesn't escape easily. You are just careless. He is your responsibility.

Keep him inside. Your vet can give you some pills to sedate him on the day if he is really nervous and he will sleep tru the night
