it means soft, gentle.
Don't allow him to grab you. If he does and you feel your arm being twisted in one direction, thrust towards that direction.
If he grabs your gi and tries to throw you, turn your toes inward a little and lift up your big toe slightly while sinking your arch into the ground. Move in the opposite direction of him as you circle each other. always be moving. Kick him inside his thigh with your toes. Sink your body.
I have a few Ju Jutsu friends.

DON'T LET IT GO TO THE GROUND!!!
Practice your takedown defense, work with a wrestler to hone your SPRAWL. Keep your distance and keep moving, get in and get out. Don't clinch with him because that could give him the opportunity to take you down.
If your buddy is any good at BJJ, than the fight is as good as done if it hits the ground. You'll have no idea what's going on but you'll quickly be tapping to a rear naked choke, armbar, or triangle. BJJ takes a very long time to learn and master so I wouldn't even bother trying to learn the techniques if you don't have much time. Just practice defending the takedown, because like I said, if it goes to the ground you're done.
Here's a good video that emphasizes the points I just made.

This was a fight between Jason Delucia and Royce Gracie in the early 90's I believe. Jason was a Kung Fu expert, very fast and good on his feet, if he had been able to defend the takedown he might have been able to end the fight on the feet. Royce is a BJJ blackbelt. As soon as the fight went to the ground Jason didn't have a prayer, but BJJ wasn't well known at that time so he didn't know just how screwed he was.

Not to be mean, but...you are getting in a mma fight and don't know what jiu jitsu is? Don't throw wild kicks cause you will be more susceptible to take-downs. Jiu jitsu an art of submissions (armbars, ki-locks, chokes, etc.) Keep jabbing distance and learn to sprawl very quickly. Good luck.

First of all, "Jiu" is the brazilian pronunciation of "Ju". Which is japanese for "yeilding/gentle".
I guess your buddy's fighting method comes from Brazilian Jiujitsu, so basiclaly he is trained skillfully in ground grappling, so be careful not to throw any wild techniques and for God sakes no high kicks.
If your buddy rushes toward you or he is trying to go straight to the ground with you, you have to learn a way to defend against that. In the ring or in competition, you are toast if you can't defend against this. On the street however, if he tries to grapple you, you can strike your way out of it. It all depends on what is happening at the current moment.

well be careful fighting in your back yard. fighting a ground style fighter you want to keep your range (jab) and not be taken down so kicks would be a bad idea if it is a high kick. Learn to sprawl. and if a submission hurts dont be afraid to tap out, no shame in losing but hard to go to the hospital afterward is not cool.
be safe not stupid and good luck
