Alaskan malamute,or a golden retriever both are well mannered loves to play and will protect the family and home front
When I was a child we had a Saint Bernard, my mom used to put the baby (2 yr) out in the yard and tell the dog to not let him out of the yard and to watch him (sounds crazy but he was a good sitter) one day she heard the dog carrying on fiercely and saw that he had the baby in a corner in the yard, the baby was terrified with all the growling and barking, mom ran out to get the baby (she thought the dog was going to hurt him) and saw that a snake had came into the yard and the dog prevented the baby from being bit and he stomped the snake to death Best dog in the world kind compassionate loving and protective. I have never heard of a saint bernard ever biting a child! Ever!

A Great Dane. They are a mix between a Mastiff and An Irish Wolf Hound. Matiff is the heaviest dog in he world, Irish Wolf Hound is the Tallest Dog. Almost ALL of them are sweet. Most are also good with children, And are playful and again most of them are playful, but, some are only playful if you want them to play with you at the moment. I am pretty sure they are easy to train too. Lots are cuddle muffins...
My point is, They seem to be pretty good dogs and they are good at protecting because they are so big, And i am young and i have been wanting one so bad! I would consider getting one as a puppy so that you can control how it acts a little more than you can with a full grown one.
Also, My Mother had a St. Bernard when she was younger... I don't know much about it except it was a male, His name was Barney, But, They are normally sweeties! My mother used to have to tie him to the table when they took pictures but, he was so afriad of camera's that he'd take the table with him!

I had both a German Sheperd and a Labrador Retriever... they are both wonderful dogs! In my opinion it is as much in the training as the personality. Labs are more playful by nature but my sheperd is our "protector". Sheperds can be quite playful too though! Tough decision. I have to say the German Sheperd is best for both over all.
And BTW.... My German Sheperd is now 13 years old and as spunky as ever... and would STILL give her life to protect us! Labs are notorius for hip dispacia too... You are taking a chance with anything in life, there is no predicting things like that. Almost every breed of dog there is can be prone to some health problem or another. My advice is to stick with looking for the personality... theres no predicting the rest. Good luck!

Hi, any one of the above dogs would be fine but remember never leave a dog with a small child unnattended no matter how much you trust it.
PS. Can someone else report the answer above which says "A Jew" to Yahoo as i think it is very offensive - and i am not jewish..thanks

I think labradoars and alsations are quite renowned for being both loving and protective of their owners.
We had cross between the two once and she was the most perfect dog, really good temperament but at the same time looked after of us if we were in trouble.

My golden retriever was exactly how you described - he was a protector, but he looooved to play. If anyone he didn't recognize came up the drive way, he would bark and growl to warn us. And he was very very playful. He loved to have his belly rubbed, and chase after a frisbee (sometimes not giving it back). He was a cuddler dog too, he loved to curl up next to me while I watched tv and just be there with me. Damn I miss that dog.

Australian Cattle Dog (not to be confused with Australian Shepherd) - ACDs, or heelers, are absolutely fantastic. Smart, playful, protective, extremely trainable - just wonderful dogs.
Aussies may also be great dogs but I don't have any experience with them.

not sure what sort of protection you are after
but daschunds make brilliaint pets, i have had three.
all have been extremely, loving and are very fun.
they are also very loyal, will protect a owner with great courage and their loud bark (decieveingly loud due to its large ribcage) but unfortunatly they are fairly small dogs if this wasnt what you were looking for.
labradors and golden retreivers also make lovely pets and tend to have pretty calm and loving temprements.
