I'm a Unitarian Universalist, and I just wanted to say that we are not at all a cult. We do NOT worship the devil!!!! We don't even believe in the devil so how the heck could we even worship it in the first place?!!!! We are free to discover our own religious way of life. But that doesn't mean we are a cult either. We have boundries just like other religions too. I don't want to get too into it though because there may be very religious people here who aren't a UU. Please stop saying it's a cult, that's really mean. You should respect other religions around you, not spread rumors like jr. high lol. But I really want to know what makes you think it's a cult?

UU is my favorite religion. Nicest people ever. No kiddo, you're not a cult. Cults require and strictly enforce dogma, something notably lacking in UU (Hence why I like it so much).

I'm a UU too.

When I was in high school in 1964, my parents were Republicans, so I figured I should be one too. Barry Goldwater, the most conservative man to ever get nominated on a major party ticket up to then, was the Republican candidate that year. I wore a Goldwater button to school.

Jeff Papeman, who sat just behind me in Homeroom for four years by virtue of the alphabet, saw it and told me "Goldwater is a communist".

Jeff knew as much about politics as the little chrome bulldog on a Mack truck knows about internal combustion, but his parents were Democrats. His logic was:

1) Goldwater is bad
2) Communists are bad
3) Goldwater has something to do with politics
4) Communism has something to do with politics
5) Goldwater must be a communist

I think the people who call us a cult have a similar logic;

1) Cults are small and non-conventional
2) UUs are small and unconventional
3) UUs must be a cult

I paste this in every time I answer a question about UUs:
============
If you leave your Q open long enough (sometimes 20 minutes is enough) someone will tell you we are a cult. Cults are new, have a single mindset and have a single, charismatic leader. We've been around for 200 years. We don't have a single mindset. Some of our leaders are charismatic, some aren't; they change every 5 or 10 years.
============

Those three points are from the dictionary, by the way.

You make a good point, but you are lighting one candle of reason in a hurricane of ignorance.

A number of fundamentalists believe they have the One True Faith and that anyone who believes differently is a Devil worshiper. "Different" can be Buddhists, Catholics and Jews, or fellow Fundamentalists who baptize in pools instead of fresh water flowing in a natural channel.

The only people I can imagine saying that are those who hold that all non-Christian religions are "cults." (I use quotes because technically speaking all religions ARE cults, including Christianity, but that's not helpful here) UUs have always appeared to me to be one of the least offensive, least threatening religious groups out there.

Fireball, the cult book was written by man. Just to ease your mind on this, the Bible doesn't use the word cult but says that it is wrong if it is against sound doctrine, the doctrine being the Bible. So, if you, as a UU don't believe there is a devil, then you go against sound doctrine. Don't worry, you are not alone, the Baptists, the Catholics, the Methodists, (you get the point) do go against sound doctrine as well.
Go ahead, email me and say how bad I am, I will just delete it anyway. I believe the gospel of the Kingdom of God, that Jesus died, was buried, and rose again the 3rd day according to scripture.

I like your tolerant and progressive religion. Your tolerance pisses off the bigots.
How do you know you are doing the right thing? Bigots scream and yell and say you are breaking the laws of their god. They will call you a devil worshiper, they will say you are misguided, they will say you are in a cult.. Then you know you are following a worthy path.

I think all religions are cults.I like to see christians dismiss each other as cults, when you all allegedly believe in the same guy.

UU (usually) teaches that all roads lead to heaven.

Jesus said He is the only way.
