When they no longer enjoy it.

The answers above are too kind. I think alot of hackers out there should give up the game. I look at their swing, can tell they've been using that same ugly motion for years at this point, see their ball dribble a few yards and conclude they will never, ever play anything that resembles golf.

I think some alot of beginners think, I'm not really athletic, but I can probably play golf. They don't realize, golf is harder to learn than just about any other sport. Sure, you don't have to be super fast or incredibly strong, but if you have no athletic talent, you're not going to be able to play golf either.

I have my good and bad days like everyone else, but everyone that's been playing long enough knows who I'm talking about. Get off the course! Take a walk in the park for your exercise. This place is for GOLFERS!

I think of it as a cost/benefit thing. When the "cost" (e.g. health risks for an aging body) outweight the "benefits" (e.g. salary) it's time for a pro to give it up. A non-pro should give up the game when playing it makes the person feel rotten more often than it makes him feel good. One has to ask oneself, am I truly enjoying myself or would I be better off doing something else?

Are we talking about a professional who has lost their abilities but keeps trying to play at the top level? or about a weekend whacker? If it is the later you should never give up. Remember this, during a round you will hiut shot that even the pros wish they could make.

When they are making the game unenjoyable for their playing partner(s), when it causes pain or physical damage to them, and/or when they no longer enjoy the game.

When it is no longer fun, if you feel it is work and not a game. I gave up water skiing and bowling for those reasons.
