The truth is that the black community teaches their children that you cannot trust the police, so you should take retribution into your own hands. AS a result, the black kids were arrested for breaking a law - namely, assault on the white kid. Now, had the black kid called the police instead when they were beaten instead of seeking retribution, the white kids would be in jail. Instead, they thought being a vigilante was a better idea, and now they are claiming it is racist that they are locked up.

The truth appears to be that some racist white kids hung nooses on a tree at school to intimidate a black kid.

For this they were suspended from school for a few days. The PA claims that there was no state law that they could be charged with.

In an attempt to seek vengeance some black kids then beat up a white kid (I do not know if he was one of the noose hangers or not) knocking him unconscious. He was not hurt too badly though as he went to a school event in the evening.

The PA, instead of charging the kids with assault (which IMHO is what they did) decided to charge them with attempted murder.

So white kids commit an act that physically hurts no one, but that is racist and deeply insulting, and effectively get away with it.

Black kids then assault someone in perceived revenge and get charges that seem to bear little relationship to the actual crime.

This does seem to send a clear message to the members of the community that white and black kids are treated differently. Without knowing the laws of Louisiana to see if the white kids could have been charged with something appropriate, or if the black kids deserved the charges they received it is not possible to come down clearly on one side or the other.

It is interesting to measure the reaction against that of the Duke Lacrosse students' alleged rape case, where the discrimination actually went the other way.

In what respect? In the respect that it would seem that these boys are being treated more harshly because they're black? In the respect that it was a retaliatory act? In the respect that perhaps it wasn't? In the respect that there's a possibility that they are all victims, both the Jena 6 and the kid they allegedly beat up?

My point is, unless someone was there, either as the victim or a perp, we're never going to know the truth of what really happened and why. And unless we live in Jena, we'll never know if it's really as bad a place as people say. Truth is subjective to the people involved, just as it is to people on the outside looking in.

There are wrongs from both sides.

There has been an unbelievably unchecked racism going on at that school, and crimes perpetuated by white kids that have gone unpunished.

However, that does not mean that it's OK for a group of black kids to beat up on a white kid, even if he IS a jerk. (And jerk is a nicer word then I'd like to use to describe him...) Two wrongs do not make a right.

The kids who beat up the white kid need to be appropriately punished for committing assault. The authority figures who've allowed this racism to continue, as well as have allowed the crimes by white kids against black kids go unpunished need to be taken to task for this. At the very least they should be losing their jobs. There might even be actions that could be considered criminal on their part.
