In Luke 14:26 Jesus says, "If any man come to me and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and sister, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple". Yet the Bible is filled with passages admonishing us to honor our mother and father; and to love our wives. Do we have a contradiction?

Only if you put your mother, father, wife, children or sister, or your own self before the Call of God. That is very simple. IF God tells you to quite you job, move to somewhere and preach, and you let any of the above talk you out of it, then who are you really serving, God or your family?

No. There is not a contradiction. The reason why I can personally say this is because I personally lived it.
I resent the 'intrusion' of my life by those who want to take my time. I like the time that I >sacrifice< to God in what I am doing right now. I want to serve Him, and those 'people' keep interrupting me! (Arrrrrrrrgh) lol
I do not want more than to serve my Lord, so I have 'hated' my life when I am forced to spend time with others and the world. I wish only to keep on the service that I do.
Honoring my parents and serving others is what a Christian life ought to be about. That's why I can respect the duties of motherhood, for instance. A housewife who is faithful to her family is conducting herself to the service of the 'body of Christ' , and she is fulfilling her duty with honor.
So if I am asked, I try to give. Though many of those times, my definition of serving God is this - what I am doing here on Y!A.

no contradiction here- what Jesus is saying is that we must love Jesus more than our father, mother, children or anyone, including ourself. Respecting our mother and father, is something we must do, but loving them more than Jesus is wrong

Jesus is speaking of the contrast between the love we feel for our family and the love we feel for God. Think of how much you love your family. Now, when you think of how much you love God, the way you feel about your family should look like hate. It's not a literal "hate," but a contrast between the love we feel for God and for others. P.S. - We should never honor our parents by dishonoring God.

No, it is not a contradiction. This passage is about becoming a disciple of Christ.

The problem that we have is that not all the Bible writers got together to write the Bible in one accord... you shouldn't mind them... just trust God and and whoever is telling you about God and the Bible... the clergy really need your tithes and offerings!!!!!!!!

Yes, you have a contradiction. And if you read the bible more throughly you'll find zillions more. My favorites are in Leviticus. And for sheer wild hallucinatory demagoguery, Revelation is a great follow up.
The bible is one of the reasons I'm an atheist.

Matthew 10:37 says it a little more clearly...
Matt. 10: 37
He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

No. It means putting them before God, or obeying them in doing something which goes against God's will.
Christ often used strong wording...it really captures the attention, doesn't it? And, He meant it, too.

While I'm not Christian, you need to understand that it doesn't mean hate. It means "to love less than"
