I've got a dirt area next to my garage, and a neighborhood cat has recently claimed it as its bathroom! I'd say the cat is pooping at least once per day over there. I need some non-harmful ways to deter the cat so he can find a new pooping ground elsewhere. Thanks

Well, the cat keeps coming back because of the scent. It's scent will linger there even after you clean it up. They smell is not necessarily recognizable to us. Pet stores have a spray that deodorizes the scent they leave behind to mark their territory and make them uncomfortable, keeping them away from your lawn for a while. These type of things comes in granules or powders and will not harm your lawn. You periodically need to reapply but it'll help. Try your local pet store or even a the garden section in your Home Depot. for just the right stuff. Or you could sprinkle moth balls variously throughout your yard in loose dirt. They won't like the smell and it'll keep them away. Good luck and take care ☺

P.S.
Regarding Tilly's answer. Good try ☺, but, citrus will also damage your lawn do to the fact that it is to acidic☺ Just saying is all ☺

There has have been given to be an smell that keeps cats away. i in my view might in no way do this one, yet you ought to purchase a muddle container to maintain in the nook of the backyard and get the strays to apply it. OR, you ought to get a much bigger fence/placed a 4x4 on the associates area, preserving the cats from being waiting to attraction to close onto the acceptable of the fence.

A layer of chicken wire laid over it will discourage the cat, he won't be able to dig around in it. Raising the wire up a few inches by setting a brick or branch underneath will guarantee he won't be able to balance on the thing.

I've heard they also dislike the smell of vinegar. Maybe that will help.
