I believe there are a few reasons. The major one is that is is not from Earnhardt country. Gordon came up while Dale Sr. was in his prime and the backbone of the sport. Then comes along this punk kid from California and is the only one seriously challenging Big E or championships. People felt Gordon was taking the "Southern Ol' Boy" image out of NASCAR. Then after Big E's death, Gordon filled his shoes as the dominate force in the Cup field and lots of people didn't except that. I grew up with a sprint car racing dad not to far from Knoxville, Ia, so i've seen this kid race and grow into the super talent he is today. So sorry, Gordon haters, He's here to stay!

Jealousy is the main reason. I also think it has something to do with Earnhardt Sr, I mean look at this way, before Gordon joined the NASCAR circuit, Sr was the man & I have much respect for him but Jeff started winning pretty much early in his career & toook some of the spotlight away from Sr. Question, how many championships did Sr win after Gordon started racing , 0 & Gordon won more races & championships than Sr when they both in the same races, head to head.

Okay, I see this question every day and it is leading me to believe that Jeff Gordon fans have a serious inferiority complex. They can't seem to get a grip on what competition is all about. I think they could learn a lot from their favorite driver.
Wouldn't it be boring if everybody was a Jeff Gordon fan?
I just know that this answer won't be picked for best answer.

Deg - He wasn't a contender the first year of the chase huh? I believe he finished 3rd just 16 points from the championship, so lets know what were talking about huh? Girlfriend out of all the answers here, I think you were talking about yourself as you let Niagara Falls loose there.. Hope everyone below you has a umbrella!
Gordon is the man, and has earned almost 100 million in race winnings, and is on his way to breaking some more records with wins and moving up the list is why he is hated.

I am not a Jeff Gordon fan. But, yes he is an awesome driver. I have NEVER thought he was a cheater or gay. Honestly, I don't like him because of too many after race interviews where he has come off as a whiner to me. I'm sorry because I know it upsets the Gordon fans. He is/will be among the greatest NASCAR drivers whether I like him or not.

Cuz he's just THAT GOOD! When I saw him first racing (and I remember as far back as the days of Cal Yarborough and the Parson and Baker boys) I said, "OMG, if this kid keeps this up, he'll dethrone King Richard!"
Since then, however, I have come to the realization that there can be more than one king... so King Richard is still "safe." But Jeff is a worthy successor!
VAAARRROOOMMM!!! GO J-Gordon GO!

I don't "hate" him, I just don't like it when one driver dominates or takes up all the camera time. There are other drivers out there, you know.
When people not familar to the sport hear about NASCAR, the first thing that explodes in their ear is "Jeff Gordon, Jeff Gordon, Jeff Gordon". And because of this, they get a complete one-sided view of the sport. They don't realize that a driver like that is about a one in 500 shot.

I get annoyed w/him because he wins too much ;-)
Seriously, I never really liked him because he's too squeaky-clean. I am drawn to the against the grain type of person. He seems like a really nice guy and I'm sure he's a great Dad, but I am 100% for Junior and will always be. Its almost like you cant be a Junior AND a Gordon fan, its a sacrilege!! LOL

There was a whole episode of some show in ESPN about why people hate him...
I personally think it's because he came in NASCAR and just blew everyone away. He won 2 of the biggest races during his rookie year...wins 4 championships very early in his career...and other reasons. I personally have never been a fan of his, though. I am a proud Dale Jr. fan, but I guess I'll have to cheer for Gordon next year if he and Jr. are going to be teammates.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that he is being compared to some of the greatest names in the sport and he is so young. While I am a HUGE # 48 fan, I completely respect Jeff Gordon and what he has achieved in his career.
