Edward J - You`re an idiot. Poll Pot, Stalin etc. Did not commit those atrocites in the name of Atheism. If anything there political systems were too dogmatic. Too much like religion.

Just claim your way is the right way and others are going to be punished....love bomb interested parties....dangle secret information like a carrot....mild hypnotism....promise cures to their problem....isolation....removal from family....special language.
There are lots of cult-creation techniques. Look 'em up.

No need to start a religious cult why not start an atheist one. You can follow the example of Chairman Mao, Stalin, Pol Potts etc. It's not a nice cult and you may have to get your hands bloody but the temporal rewards can be huge. Other advantages unlike the Davidians you won't have to worry about the government raiding your compound. You are the government and the the chance of a coup are historically statistically small. B grimey you are confused. All communist countries are officially atheistic and as as dogmatic as and fundamentalist belief. They certainly didn't do it in the name of religion and truth be told they had a murderous vendetta against religion. And besides people only resort to name calling and insults when they run out of intelligent debate.

I suppose if there was a formula for becoming a messiah everybody would do it. If you can come up with some prophesies that people will believe that's a good start. Healing the sick is even better. And if you can raise the dead your cult is guaranteed to be a hit. Good luck.

Why would you want to do that. If you are lonesome please just make some friends. There is enough hate and judgment in the world why would you want to bring another set of rules and regulations to a world full of so many? seriously work on your self esteem, you don't have to have a following to be liked. You should like yourself the way you are and not care what others think of you. Power over people can have it's down side, look at the examples you yourself mentioned.

The easy part about what you're proposing to do is that you have group of people willing to meet you halfway. Since it's a Christian cult Christians already believe part of what you'll be saying.

Promise the sheep that god will give them positions of authority in your church. That'll have enough scrambling for your approval - sorry, I mean 'burning to do god's work' - to keep you in members for the rest of your life. Oh, and remember not to take ALL of the daughters for your concubines - that could make even the most devout cult parent cranky. As long as there are a few who can be seen to have their daughters unsullied, it will prevent most of the rest complaining.
