No, it's fine here in Oz. You'll have no trouble meeting people once you get here. We have our own travelling culture in this great wide land, so there are always other backpackers, daytrippers (sunday drivers!), and grey nomads (the older generation who spend their retirement travelling around the country) on the move. So, you may meet someone in rural Victoria and run into them again 6 months later in Perth.

A lot of other travellers come by themselves and join with other backpackers when they arrive. So instead of hiring a car and taking a day-trip by yourself, you would divide the cost of the hire car with other backpackers and you would all go together.

And even if you're not planning on being a backpacker, there are always bus tours and groups that you can travel with at any time.

Ok, have fun, happy travels, and just promise that when you get here you won't barrack for Collingwood in the AFL. Otherwise you can just go straight home, mate!

Like everyone has said so far, Oz is quite obliging to the traveller, you will be just fine as long as you take normal precautionary measures and don't make yourself a target for the rare idiot. You'll meet some amazing people and lifelong friends. Enjoy!

Travelling on your own is fine, you shouldn't have any problems at all. There are plenty of people doing exactly that. If you are doing the backpacker route, you will meet lots of new people but you will anyway. Australians are friendly.
