The 10/22 is great after you have replaced the factory barrel, trigger and spent a couple of hundred on other upgrades. If you like buying and installing mods and making a 'unique' gun and you like emptying 25+ round magazines as fast as you can, the 10/22 can't be beat. They can also be very accurate with some of that stuff. Out the box, they are mediocre at best in the accuracy department.
If you really want a accurate .22 without getting all that stuff, you need to get a bolt action.
You won't make a bad decision if you get a 10/22, they are fun, but a lot of what you hear is hype. Not a hater, just a realist.
I suggest you go over to RimfireCentral.com and join the forums, then read through the various sections for different makes of .22. You will have a much more educated perspective on which to base a decision.
Marlin's Model 60, the most popular rifle in the world, is more accurate out of the box in my opinion. No aftermarket accessories and the old style tube magazine, but a great dependable and accurate .22 you can play with on day one for under $150 in most cases.

The Ruger is the rifle that all other semi-automatic rifles are measured by....The Marlin 60 is a very popular gun for the "economy" shooter that doesn't want to spend the few extra dollars for a Ruger. The Marlin also has a lousy rep for jambs and action issues, that Ruger never has or never will have. The Ruger 10/22 can be purchased for just under $200 in blued finish, stainless steel finish, as well as 22 Magnum caliber and 17 HMR caliber. See if Marlin offers that..... As a Gunsmith, and a Gun Shop Owner,I sell Ruger 10-22's at a rate of about 10-1 over ANY other brand of semi-auto 22 on the market. It's not HYPE...Just the truth... The Ruger is quality built, reliable, accurate (as the person's ability to shoot it is anyway) and priced so it is affordable to just about everyone. As far as problems or repairs needed. I've only had 2 come back for minor replacement parts that were broken from being dropped (1 of those the Stock split). I have NEVER had a Ruger 10-22 returned for ANY mechanical or firing issue that needed repair. To me that speaks volumes.....

Sure, there are other semi-autos besides Ruger.
It is just that the Ruger 10/22 offers the best value for the money of any .22 Semi-auto on the market. You MIGHT find a more accurate, more reliable rifle, but you can bet that it will cost lots more than the Ruger 10/22.

My two cents.... You can not and will not beat or compare to the Ruger 10/22 in its price range. They are great shooters. Loads of fun for plinking and "bunny bop'in". There are lots of Ruger 10/22 after market accessories to dress up your Ruger. Like Stocks, Barrels, Larger Capacity Magazines ect......
I have a Tactical 24-7 Sighting System (Laser Sight & Light) mounted on a BSA Scope. Its great for those early morning or late afternoon rabbit hunts. I also have 4 Eagle 30 round magazines, 2 Butler Creek 25 round magazines, as well as the stock 10 round magazine. 180 rounds ready for a day in the field. There's nothing I hate more than......Running out of ammo, out in the field, while hunting rabbit.
A lot of people have complained about the "Cheapness" of the Eagle and Butler Creek magazines. I can see that not everyone is going to like having the gun jam on you a little more than normal. But you cant expect a $12 magizine to perform like a top. I have come to conclusions...That a little bit more jammin is worth it. compared to missing 5 rabbits, while you reload.
I love my Ruger 10/22 and have no regrets buying it. A buddy of mine is thinking of selling his. Just because he likes his Ruger MarkIII semi auto pistol better. I'm really considering buying his 10/22. Go ahead and buy a Ruger 10/22. You won't regret it and you'll have lots of fun "bunny bop'in".

Man, There are other semi's.
But you can do literally anything with, as well as to, a Ruger.
The Ruger is right up there next to the 1911 pistol and the AR15 as far as the avalibility of aftermarket acessories.
You can buy:
Target triggers,
Target hammers,
Bull barrels in several lengths, weights and types,
Fixed, folding, adjustable, target, tactical and bullpup stocks in a variety of designs and materials,
Rail systems,
Muzzle brakes and flash hiders,
Various open target sight systems,
Magazines and drums from 10 to 50 rounds capacity,
Extended bolt handles,
Extended magazine latches,
-I could go on and on...
- And you just cannot GET another rifle that gives you all of those options.
And thanks to the 10/22's streightforward design, you can install all of these options yourself, easily, in minutes.
The Ruger is the only .22 rifle that has been GOOD ENOUGH, to spawn an enormous aftermarket parts market.
There's a reason it's been avalible in it's for over 40 years.
It's the best and most adaptable all-around design that's ever come down the pike.
I've owned several over the years,
And while I don't happen to own one at the moment,
When I AM next in the market for a .22 autoloader,
- It'll be another Ruger.
- I'll go with what I know I can't go wrong with.
Yes, there are other .22 semi's....
....but there's only one 10/22.

The Ruger 10/22 is an outstanding firearm right out of the box. All I did to mine is spent some time with a piece of sand paper and floated the barrel. Right now everything else is completly factory stock. With CCI mini-mag ammo it shoots about a 2 inch group at 100 yards. None of the other .22s in my house will do that.

Yes, the Ruger 10/22 is that good. If I were looking for a .22 autoloader (and didn't already have one) that's what I'd get. HOWEVER, lately when I go to shoot I grab my father's old Savage 29B. It's a pump action and reliably shoots shorts, longs, and long rifles. The tubular magazine holds something like 18 rounds of shorts, it's deadly accurate, and about as quick as an autoloader. I'm not sure what's currently available that would be equivalent to it but definitely consider a pump.

The only thing special about a Ruger 10/22 is that you can modify it with all kinds of kits. There are many other .22's that are better than Ruger. I've shot a Ruger, and I prefer my Remington over the Ruger.

I've got a Ruger 10/22 and I really like mine. I think Savage arms makes a semi auto .22. Savage makes some really good and inexpensive guns so it would be worth a look.
