It is mainly because, such people have had some experiences in their life, where they had run out of faith, hope and maybe one of the vital juices required to run the process of life. When they overcome their problem, using faith, any faith for that matter, not just religious, they develop a sense as if to teach that principle to others.
They think that it is a favour for the mankind which they are doing by proposing a holy faith which they follow. But sometimes, little do they understand that each person has his/her comfort zone. There are ones who are comfortable in their lives, may not be needing a spiritual upliftment, and not because they don't need it, but because they already have a faith which they follow. It is one of the reasons why it is mentioned in scientific terms that "Atheism" can also be regarded as an alternative religion.
As I said above, each person has his/her comfort zone as far as their faith is concerned. If that is invaded, then it becomes bad. We hear of forced conversions, religious turmoils, all because someone is trying to impose one faith on another. This is not entirely true. If anyone maintains a case of "I am holier than you" that is a real bad trait, and in my view, it is a disgrace to any faith which he/she might be practising.
Good luck.

The rationale provided by our good friend CJ is a great illustration.
CJ, friend, I love Christ with all my heart. I love you, as well, but your attitude? No. Not one bit. What Christ did for us, something we don't deserve and can't earn, should make us humble, not pompous; loving, not sarcastic and hateful; patient, not dismissive; kind, not hostile. For all your delusions that the "thumbs-down" your answers garner means they're also toward Christ, what they really mean is that you're showing some people what it means to you to be a Christian ... and they want no part of it, if to be Christian means to set oneself up as the judge of all others. You are a stumbling block, in other words. Regardless of your opinion about my own personal standing with God based solely on the church I attend, this is the truth. It is you I fear for. Christ is my judge. And also yours.

Yes I feel some do have a case of that. Some have a very bad case actually.
I think you can tell with some people who are new to the religion, they seem to be eager and almost over religious, quick to please their given religion. And quick to try and convert others along with them.

All crazy answers are equeel. If I focus on the silliness or lack of logic in the answer, I might get so mad I'll forget my own common sense.
If you look at certain individuals as kids that haven't grown, nobody with a heart could hate a kid.

Would Born again Christian, Geoge W. Bush be the right example to second your statement?

Yes, I'm a born again Christian myself. It's a shame that there are those that claim Christianity, yet have that attitude. Doesn't really bring glory to God, does it.
I guess if you see that kind of "religious air" about them, you almost wonder if they're really born again believers at all! If you want to determine if they're really who they say they are and not just some hypocrite, line their life up with what the Word of God says. "By their fruit you will know them."
I think there's even a verse that specifically speaks to that very issue. If you want, contact me and I'll try to look it up. ^^

i am christian, and yes, i think there are some like that. even with other christians you'll see that. but i suppose that's the case with any group. animal activists seem to look down on meat eaters. environmentalists seem to look down on people who "don't care" about the environment, and so on. when people feel strongly about something, they need to make a conscious effort to remember that not everyone shares their opinion.
and no i don't think you can tell- new christians seem to embrace it more rather than take it for granted, but i think you'll find judgement either way.

I wouldn't call the feeling "holier than thou" but I would refer to as a refreshing new enlightenment that makes a person feel that they have made a total improvement of their life quality than what they had before.

Most certainly don't mean to come across that way. Whether they are Christians or not some families/cultures come across like their crap doesn't stink. When a non-Christian acts this way it's not a problem. But when a Christian does everyone likes to say, "Gottcha...see Christianity is stupid!"
