Before will give you more energy to burn. After will give you the nutrients you need for your muscles to recover. Before and after are both fine. You do not need to eat a steak and have muscle milk... you can substitute the 2 for one another as both are a great source of protein. In fact, if you eat healthy (eggs, meat, grains, foods rich in carbs such as rice and pasta), you have no need to drink protein shakes.
Protein after a work out is a must or your muscles will not recover correctly. Before is optional. Protein shakes can be taken 3 times a day but I wouldn't recommend it as you are just loading yourself with more protein than you actually need... unless of course you are a vegetarian and have no other source of protein.

The general consensus is to eat unrefined carbohydrates before physcial exertion as it gives you energy slowly. Afterwards take protein. A steak often won't really do much as not only is it solid and will therefore take more time for the protein to go into your system, it also takes longer still to go cook it/order it in a restaurant.
Your best bet is some slow-release carbs before working out (although I believe having lived on a high protein diet for an extended period of time that protein is just as good in the long run) and a big dose of protein afterwards.
Oh and your answer was really hard to understand what with the lack of punctuation...
Oh and I wouldn't listen to the above poster's response, protein shakes and formulas clearly increase the speed at which muscle increases in size. Only an idiot could deny it. It just makes everything quicker.

your research was based on bad sources. You need to supply protein and nutrients to your body AFTER a workout, because that's when your body needs it the most to recover from workout. If you don't recover properly you will not make progress. Ask any bodybuilder or athlete, everyone will tell you the meal and drink after a workout is the most important, it's crucial. When you do it before a workout it's only good to get some energy if you don't have any.

Okay, you'll want to drink one after you work out for the best results. The general rule is one gram of protein for every pound you weigh. I weigh 230, so I try to consume that much protein throughout the day. You should load up on healthy carbs early in the day and eat most of your protein in the afternoon and early evening. Also, grilled chicken is a great source of protein, and you can usually buy it cheap.

i usually drink one after, not before, just liek you shouldnt eat before you work out cuz ull get sick in some cases, and just feel bloated....
as well as one after the workout, i often drink another an hour or two before bed because it gives your body soemthing to rebuild the muscle with overnight as well..
i am toned and have relatively large muscles, and have noticed gradual gains since i started protein a few months ago.

Protein is nonsense. If you eat a balanced diet, you wont need proteins that you buy in those inflated priced plastic jars.
It is a marketing high yield business to fool idiots like you. Do you actually know what excess protein does to your body?
Do some research. The only thing that makes muscle is not protein, but WORK!
Ever see muscle men in prison, African natives, etc. They are muscle houses without those stupid shakes. Invest your hard earned money instead. Be smart, not stoopid!
Cheers,
Jaffa

1ST of all muscle milk is **** it's the worst think I've ever had. I drink one shake in the morning and one right after I work out, seems to be alright. I probably wouldn't injest more than one dose over less than two hours, your body can't absorb protein that fast, and whatever you don't use you store (fat)

Protein works best after your workout...
Before your workout, it's recommended that you supplement with carbohydrates (and only a tiny amount of protein).
