There is one thing you can do to recover as much of the data as possible.

Open a blank workbook, then create a link formula to the damaged file. If the damaged file is called File.xls for example then in cell A1 of Sheet1 type in:

=['C:\Files\[File.xls]Sheet1, !A1

Copy this formula down and to the right in your worksheet. It will try to recover the data from Sheet1 in your damaged file. It will recover the data that can be recovered, but not the formulas.

This works because a link formula does not need the source file to be open to recover the data.

Good luck in your endeavors! Next time back it up.

I have had success opening damaged XL documents in Open Office, saving them in a different name as XL .xls type and then been able to use them with XL again.
