My husband had his gallbladder removed about 4 years ago. He's had recurrent pain similar to a gallbladder attack twice since then. Both times he returned to the surgeon who performed his gallbladder removal and both times the surgeon did a ERCP and increased the size of the Sphincter of Oddi. The last time was about 1 1/2 years ago. Just recently my husband started feeling very fatigued and had intermittant pain similar to the gallbladder attack pain but not as severe. Today after he had something to eat he said that the pain had returned and it was exactly the same as the pain with his gallbladder. He has made an appointment with his family doctor and hopefully tests will show what is going on. I don't want him to go back to the surgeon who did the gallbladder removal, we don't have much faith in him seeing as my husband has had so many difficulties after the surgery. I don't know if this time it is a problem with the Sphincter of Oddi again or possibly gallstones.

Oh yes it is definately my husband who does not want to see this surgeon again. After the first ERCP he didn't tell us anything about SOD or how long it would be for recovery. I found out after research on the internet. Techincally no they are not gallstones because he doesn't have a gallbladder but apparently stones can still form. He has actually been on a fairly low fat diet for quite awhile. He was on a medication called Questran for a long time after his surgery which is an anti-cholesterol and anti-diarrheal. He did a cleanse back in March and a lot of his post gallbladder surgery symptoms (loose bowel movements) seemed to disappear and he asked his doctor about stopping the Questran and was told that it was up to him. He did stop taking it back in March and was fine until recently when all these symptoms seemed to return (the loose BM's and the pain).

Yes it can. he bile ducts to the liver are still intact after the gall bladder is removed and they can form in there. I was told this by the surgeon that did my surgery. He may need to alter his diet and see if that helps. Have him go to low or no fat for a week and see if that helps.

Not gallstones. It may be a hypertonic or hypotonic sphincter or a stenosis. These are examples of sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOD) and are difficult to distinguish. Are you sure your husband's postop difficulties were the surgeon's fault? And is it your husband who lacks faith, or is it you? It really doesn't matter as long as he gets the help he needs.

Sphincter of Oddi manometry can help determine function. Ask about it.

Although gallstones can cause obstructions anywhere along the bile ducts, they form in the gallbladder. Your husband had a cholecystectomy 4 years ago therefore he doesn't have gallstones unless preexisting.

I had my gallbladder removed dec 2014, I have pain off and on ever since. Then I had to have my appendix removed feb 2016. Even though I ve pain off and on where my gallbladder was, never very severe, until now! I feel exactly as bad and in so much pain I m in tears, just like when I was so sick from my gallbladder. I never had stones, my gallbladder just stop working and I got very sick, and it lasted for about 3 months before they finally saw "sludge" in my gallbladder and I could finally have the HEDI scan. By then it was 12%... 5 days later it completely stopped working.

My mother had something similar - sometimes the stones can escape into the pancreatic duct(I think?) and this can cause pain and nausea.
Im not sure if the test he has had would have looked for this.
Even though the gall bladder has gone, some stones may have travelled.
I am not a dr so it is best to check back with the physician.
Hope all goes
well.
My mother is quite well now after they found the wandering stones.

No because gallstones develop in the gallbladder and are a result of to much vile, which in time develops into gallstones.

Has your husband had his appendix checked? It is very close to the gallbladder and can have the same symptoms.
