There are two reasons for the usage. One is like everyone else has said... when you do widows updates windows stores backup copies of all the files it updates for every update. That takes a lot of space (set your computer to show hidden files and look for the folders named $NtUninstallKB*****$ in c:\windows). The second reason is your swap file. A swap file is hard drive space used as RAM. Your swap file is probably also taking up a gigabyte or so. Another trick that most people don't think of or know about is the amount of reserved space for the Recycle Bin. If you right click on the Recycle Bin and go to Properties, you'll see a slider bar that is probably set to 10% of your total hard drive space. That is 1.5GBs right off the bat. You can probably decrease that as well if you don't really use the Recycle Bin. There are actually a bunch of places in windows like this like your internet browser cache size (its probably only 100MBs though) is another place. If you look around online you'll find quite a few sites that tell you how to trim the fat so to speak. Hope this helps.

Linux has equivalent photoshop software, but you must be using Linux. GIMP,GIMPSHOP, Krita

Here is a website to explore this option further.
