I think mine is fractured, but I am debating whether or not to go to the doc. I've read that there isn't much they can do for it other than tell you to rest and prescribe pain killers. I already have vicoprofen for a back problem.

So, does anyone think it's necessary that I see a doctor?

No it is not necessary. There is nothing they can do other than xray it and say yup its busted all right.

Take allot of aspirin, don't sneeze, and try to find a comfortable position.

I raced motocross and road bikes. broken ribs 4 occasions, collar bone x2, cracked spine L3, bruised internal, etc.
And allot of sprains and bruises.

I bruised my ribs 1x and it hurt more than a break.

ABSOLUTELY YES, I THINK YOU DO! If you have an injured back already, you could have done other damage to your back. I think a full evaluation is necessary, just to be sure.

You know -all the things you have heard,, they could give you a "rib belt to help ease the pain'
i can say i tried this myself by taping--and it felt so good!

IF YOU CAN GET A PRESCRIPTION FOR LIDOCAINE PATCHES -OR CREME THIS WILL HELP A LOT.
THE CREME I AM TALKING ABOUT CONTAINS THIS:
ketoprofen, baclofen and lidocaine- it is a muscle relaxer, anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. HUN THIS STUFF WORKS!! AND THE DR can have any of the meds mixed into it.
I can give you the exact script if needed - to ask for.
i use it for everything painful- lol

. One thing that really really helped me was to go to a POOL for pool therapy.
(i owned my own at the time , i fell into the hot tub and smashed it on the edge of the hot tub-, BUT THE STEPS; talk about wanting do die!! but i stayed in the water for a little while and -i felt so much better- infact-I LIVED IN THE WATER FOR MONTHS!
When I finally gave in and went for x-rays- my Dr was not pleased...I was lucky that the jagged edge didnt break- or whatever he said.( i just minimized it though) So my point is...You may want to make the pool your best friend! You are probably wondering how you would exercise and POOL THERAPY, IS the best! You are 1/3 your body weight, so it is much easier to move around. No one says u have to do 1 hr of aqua aerbics to be exercised, same benefits are obtained just by 'walking' in the water. or jogging in place.

Make your pillow your best friend. to hep ease when coughing! be careful

I DO FEEL FOR YOU- AND PLEASE GO GET EVALUATED!! FEEL BETTER SOON

Yes I have and it hurts really bad, so if your rib was broken you would probably know.

It is probably a good idea to go to the doctor just to be sure that that is the only problem. There are alot of things that can go along with broken ribs such as punctured lungs, or other internal organ damage which is far more severe.

But as far as if your rib is broken, and that is all- they will give you pain meds and that is it.

Good luck!

Go to the doctor, just in case you are in danger of puncturing a lung or some other organ with your broken rib. I got mine broken in a fight and didn't bother going to the doctor. It was quite painful for a number of weeks and there were no medical complications, but you never know. It can happen. Go to the doctor.

I have had as many as three broken ribs at one time and all the hospital done was take a few xrays and give my an ace bandage to wrap around my ribs.
I broke one rib of few years ago and even heard it crack and knocked the wind out of me but this time i just got the old ace bandage out and wore it for a week or so and evrything turned out allraight.

For a broken rib the usual protocol is rest, antiinflammatories and respiratory exercises, so... BUT until you have a diagnosis of exactly what happened you cannot attempt to self-treat a condition. What if it was something more serious?
Sorry, but yes, go to a doctor.

Years ago I had a broken rib that punctured the lung & caused it to collaspe.
True they do nothing for a broken rib, but I think I'd at least get a chest xray to make sure it is just a rib & nothing more.

May take 6 weeks to breath cough and sneeze without pain you can get a wrap or use pillows to support your ribs but that is about all that can be done unless you suspect a jagged rough break that may cause more damage just take it easy for a while.

Hopefully you're nonetheless beneath the care of a general practitioner. That a lot harm additionally broken ligaments, tendons, muscle tissues, and so forth. All of that demands to heal. It's flu season and you're going to be extra inclined to flu and chest colds as a result of the lung harm. Go and spot your general practitioner.
