If you would like to adopt: www.petfinder.com. That is where I found my Saint Bernard pup!
If you are looking to purchase a Saint from a breeder, do your homework! Since you had a Saint, I don't need to tell you about all their health issues and such and I do not need to stress the importance of finding a reputable and responsible breeder.
Join your local breed club or attend the local club events. There you will meet lots of Saints, owners, and breeders. Ask tons of questions!
I wish you the best of luck!

I wouldn't suggest either one to be honest. But it's your choice. Saint Bernards are great dogs, don't get me wrong, but with their shortened life span, the two years to train one or two years for senior life, they just don't makes sense to use them. On top of that they're rather large, and can't go with you everywhere such as on a plane. Simply because of their size. Labs can make good service dogs. However you have to understand most labs take an extra year of training, that's three years. A 1 year old lab pup is like a 6 month old lab pup in most other breeds. They're also very destructive as puppies, I'm talking puppies as in the first two years of life at least. Even the 'soft' labs are destructive and are difficult to train early on. That's not to say they can't make good service dogs later though. Golden's I find seem to work the best. We've tried red labs as well, it's a designer dog between a yellow lab and Viszla, and they're highly intelligent but man are they stubborn. Our's are still very young so I can't suggest them either at this point. I've seen a verity of dogs become good service dogs, but some breeds are more common to do so than other's. When looking for a service dog try and find a breeder that breeds service dogs, or has them in it's lineage. Otherwise look at the mother of the pups, is it sensitive to it's owner emotional or physical state? What was it breed for? No hunting breeds, if the dog is breed to hunt it'll have too much energy. Is the mom laid back or hyper. You don't want a hyper dog, you need a dog that will be calm in any situation. So I don't suggest back yard breeders either. You want the dogs to be genetically tested and free from common ailments of the breed. Hope this helps, Good luck!

So sorry to hear about your Saint. 11 years is a good old age for a Saint. That tells me you cared for the dog very well. I had one live to be thirteen but, that is nearly unheard of. I would suggest you contact akc.org and locate a reputable breeder in your state. Be careful there are a lot of Puppymillers out there pushing Saints. I am not expecting a litter until the end of 2008. My b itch hasn't had her OFA yet. Still dont know if she is breeding material. She is only one year old so I cant even attempt breeding for at least another year. Good Luck in your search. I understand what you are saying. Once you've owned a Saint other dogs are nice but, they just aren't Saints.
Thanks Animal

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog!
Here's a breeder referral from the Saint Bernard Club.
http://saintbernard.org/breeder_ref.htm#NEW%20YORK
There's also a list of breeder guidelines, so that should help. Good luck finding your dog - and definitely keep an eye on Petfinder. Your puppy could be there tomorrow if not today. Good luck to you and your dogs!

I suggest checking the paper for a breeder. In the NY/NJ area saint Bernard rescues aren't common and getting one from a pet store is horrible as they use puppy mills.
I suggest checking online for breeders or the paper. Long Island, ny has a lot of breeders, i bought a boxer there 2 years ago.
