If you're basically healthy, you may not need a flu vaccination. And yes, they work. However, because you're in college and are surrounded by people all day and in contact with contaminated surfaces, a flu vaccination may be a good idea. It's your decision.

I didn't have a flu shot for years and ended up catching the flu three years ago. I spent almost two weeks in bed and then ended up with a throat infection. It was not a fun experience. My husband also caught the flue that season. I am getting my flu shot this year because I don't want to be laid up like that again. I was so sick for so long. It's your choice but since you're in college, I'd advise getting one.

at your age, it's simply personal choice. If you get the flu, you are young enough and strong enough to weather the two to three weeks of being sick....however, the flu shot does work to prevent the three viruses that are targeted this year, and to diminish the symptoms of any of the other flu viruses you may catch....as you are in college and in contact with a wide range of people and potentially contaminated surfaces and don't want the shot, fine...use a hand sanitizer like purell everytime you touch a surface like a door handle etc that could be contaminated, and keep your hands away from your face as much as possible.

College students are around a lot of people in class, at the union, and in the dorms. This gives you added chances of getting the flu from being in densely populated areas. I would definitely advise having the flu vaccine each year.

Your young and fit, you probably don't need it. Elderly and people with long term medical conditions should have it.
Although, I have kidney failure and forgot to have it last season - no flu this year, not even a cold! Only had 'flu once in my life - oh boy, it is dreadful, couldn't get out of bed for two days, felt weak as a kitten! The difference between a cold and flu is - if it is raining fifty pound/dollar notes in your garden and you can't get outta bed to catch 'em - its 'flu!

If it's not broken, don't fix it. Your young, and healthy, and really don't need a flu shot. Flu shots are usually for the elderly, and people with week immune systems. If you never had the flu shot before, and you hardly get sick, there's no need for it. I'm 35 and never get the flu shot. Come to think of it, I haven't had the flu since I was about 15!!!
