1.6mm of tread across three quarter of the width of the tyre, so technically it can be below the legal limit on the edges and still pass the m.o.t

You are required to have a minimum of 1.6mm tread across 3/4 of the tyre tread. You can also have 1mm the full width of the tyre. A lot of garages will fail a car if the tyre is worn to the wear bars, but to be honest a tyre is past its best by then any way

The tyre law states 1.6mm IN A CONTINUOUS BAND over the central 3/4 of the tyre.

ROSPA recommend they are changed at 3mm

The sidewalls must also be free from damage

hi NN
Simply, in the UK, its 1.6mm over the central 3/4 of the tread of the tyre on the full tyre,a visable tread pattern must be on the remaining tread but can be less than 1.6mm, with no rips, tears, cuts, bulges.

good luck...

Just to add what people have said, that 75% of the tread area has to be the CENTRAL 75%.

If you look after your tyres, they will wear evenly all the way across, anyway. If they wear more in the middle, the pressures are too high - more wear on the outside, pressures too low.

1.6mm is the correct answer, BUT, it is unsafe to drive with less than 3mm, as the tyre characteristics change dramatically below that.
