Your question assumes that a 4 year old's life is more valuable that mine. It is not. It is the same.
However, if the child is my own, or my relative, I would take the bullet, because I am saving a blood relative. It is the same as saving myself.
If the child is someone elses', I won't unless I took an oath to save the child's life. If I made no commitment, I don't have to. But that doesn't mean I will not try to get the person responsible for killing the child in jail.

There are an infinite number of circumstances which could lead up to the 4 year old boy getting shot. I know in some third world countries, they strap bombs to children and make them walk up to a soldier or a building and blow them up.
Not everything is black and white in man's eyes. There are grey areas where you don't want to live with either decision.
I can say for sure that the majority of the time, I would. But there's always those bizarre, wacko, messed up situations where you have to take a lot more than what you immediately see into consideration.

a lot of people will probably say I am lying, but I can honestly say yes, I would if it came to that.
It is better to die because you love, than to live without it.
people are only afraid of death because they fear the unkown, that is all.
who knows what that child might end up accomplishing because you saved him?
My answer has nothing to do with religion, or anything. my answer would be the same if I were an athiest. I dont even have a religion, I just beleive in God, and I beleive God beleives in Love.
I would do the same for a twenty year old too.

I don't think many would stand by an watch it happen. If a gun were being held at your chest while they were preparing to shoot the boy, you would both die if the wrong moves were made. If shots were being randomly fired and the child were in danger, like most people, I would do what I could to get him to safety while hoping neither of us got shot.

If it were my child, definitely. Otherwise, I'm not really sure but probably not.
One question though: does the person shooting have really bad aim? Because if they're aiming for a 4 year old that bullet should his an adult in the leg or groin area, not the chest.

I'm sorry, I have to be honest, I don't think I would. Who knows, maybe put in that situation with no time to think, perhaphs I would, but that's a really small probability. Also, it depends who the kid would be. If it would be my child, I would take a bullet for him without any hesitation...

That's not a question of morals; It's instinct -- a split-second decision that a person makes.
Is saving the life of a child worth dying for? Is it my child?
By the time your brain answers these questions, that bullet will have reached that child. But some people will tell you that they would at least try to throw their body in front of the child to protect him, especially if it's their child.

For me, I might have to take a look at the current situation before I can give a definite answer. Most probably is to try to stop the gunner from shooting.

this is one of the best questions i've seen. answering it is really hard, i don't think i could honestly answer that unless i was faced with that situation. right now i would say yes 100% but i'm not faced with that situation. i would like to think i was the kind of person who would save an innocent child but i really could not be totally honest in my answer if i were to say yes 100% this is a very good question to ask yourself. thank you
