I'd take Ubuntu with Beryl over Vista anyday.

One big reason not to use Vista is the DRM crap they've put in. See : http://www.defectivebydesign.org/

First run the Vista Upgrade Adviser to make sure your PC /Hardware/Software are all compatible with Vista, alot are not, as for a pirated copy of Vista bad news if it has an activation crack that crack is an undetectable virus which can and will run a virtual machine through your PC and you will never know it , and software piracy is illegal and Microsoft will sooner or later nail you and the fine is huge your better off buying a System Builders OEM Vista from Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116202

Vista does allow for a trial version, but if you are working with a "cracked" version, I'd highly recommend not installing it. You have no idea what hacks the "cracker" could have placed into the software.

Given you have Windows XP Home, what are you hoping to get from Windows Vista? Personally I'd recommend staying with XP until you have a software requirement that requires you to upgrade or you buy a new system with Vista. I have both XP and Vista and I see no compelling reason to upgrade my existing system to Vista. I've actually considered switching the Vista systems to XP to resolve a few annoying problems I've had with Vista (power save for display doesn't work at times, network performance seems degraded, overall performance slugish at times, even with higher performance components, etc...). I just can't bring myself to purchase more XP licenses.

Are you going to download it to install it over XP. Or just to play around with it. I paid for Vista ultimita with my new machine build. I also have XP. I hardly ever go into Vista now days. My games, and Word Processing is all in XP. Vista I go there if i just want to surf and check e-mail. Thats about it. I hope to get Crysis from Vista and play more games that way. If you actually are going to use vista then don't try to hack it. if you are only doing it for fun to play around with once and in a while then you can try it. I wouldn't.

Chances of getting caught with pirated Vista are pretty good.

Vista – How Microsoft Prevents Piracy

Learn what features of Vista will be disabled if the software isn't genuine
Microsoft's efforts to combat software piracy will be stronger with Windows Vista than they are with XP. Microsoft Software Protection Platform, the Vista equivalent of Windows Genuine Advantage, will virtually disable your computer if your Vista install doesn't pass Microsoft's validation test.

Exactly what happens when Microsoft determines that a version of Vista isn't genuine isn't entirely clear in the white paper describing the Sotware Protection Platform (SPP) tools. At one point, Microsoft writes that people using a failed copy of Vista will not lose access to their personal data.

Instead, they will see a persistent message on the desktop telling them the copy of Vista isn't genuine and they will lose access to certain Vista features including:

Save yourself time and hair, dont.
We have 10 licence for Vista, and only 1 machine with it as we need to support customers with, otherwise everyone is on XP, for a good reason.

vista is not worth it, first of all it slows your pc down, 2nd they do a check every 30 days and scan your pc and any downloaded or cracked programs, 3rd of all you can only buy it!! and its expensive!!

Well surprisingly you are allowed to download Vista.
And install it and use it for 30 odd days without any problems.
A trial version if you will :)
