Try San Diego, it is a very popular destination for people and most everyone seems to love it. It's less congested and hectic than LA and SF and cheaper to live in too. So I would try San Diego and if you still want a bigger, more urban city then you could move on to LA or SF. The weather is the best in CA, it has the warmest ocean water on the west coast, and there is plenty to do all the time.

I think it might be more a matter of what you can afford!

If you come to the San Francisco area, check out Marin County (to the north) and San Mateo County to the south. They are beautiful but very expensive places to live. Some towns in the East Bay are also very nice--Walnut Creek, San Ramon, Danville, etc.

I like the SF area better than the LA area. The culture is a little different, but I think the biggest difference is that it's cooler up here. And the traffic is not as bad (but still bad).

If you don't like big crowds and a lot of tourists, check out Ventura. From L.A. you can just catch the Pacific Coast Highway and head North. It's a nice drive through Malibu along the coast. From Ventura, you can also head over to Ojai. It's a cool little town, and Santa Barbara isn't far from this two either, but there's more tourists there.

Definitely get a job lined up first. If you're leaning toward the entertainment industry, LA for sure. If you're leaning toward tech, northern California is better. Both are EXTREMELY expensive places to live. I've lived in Long Beach for 10 years and love it here. It's sort of a microcosm of LA, and it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

i would say LA or San Diego. South cali is more or less busy and full of life. When you go Norht, it becomes more and more homo/sleepy stupid :) haha... plus weather is sucky up there.
Ive traveled CA alot and now live in LA, there is ALOT of stuff going on here, and it is hard to tell "whats better" unless you ask specific question.
PM if u want for details and other stuff.
peace

Not sure why you don't want LA but I am from SAn Diego, too young to remember so have no info on it other than I went to visit my sister and it is gorgeous. Anything you want is there within a few miles.. Desert, ocean, mountains. Sea world is there and San Diego zoo both great attractions for cheap.

I'm originally from NC..I've lived in Long Beach and Huntington Beach....I love it out here, especially the weather. Definitely check out these two places you will love it...Huntington Beach (aka Surf City) great beach, tons of great restuarants by the beach, and the Pier is awesome, and finally a great shopping center here now right off the 405 freeway, Bella Terra its great..Long Beach when I first moved there the only thing great was the Long Beach Grand Prix, now they have the Aquarium, tons of shopping, events, restuarants, shoreline village tons of shops never a dull moment now in Long Beach....Its Southern Calif, get use to tons of traffic or you'll have a chronic case of road rage..Its just a fact of life out here..Traffic.

You just need to visit a lot of different places and make your decision. Plan on visiting the major cities often (LA, SF, San Diego) and the surrounding areas and figure it out. Give yourself a year to do this.

It all depends on how much you can afford, what kind of work you do, what kind of weather you like and what kind of community you want. For example, some peoplewnat the busy city life wiin a strong gay community. Other may want more of a middle class neighborhood with good schools for the kids.
