Pay them as much as you can afford, caring for life and well being of your child should be your top priority in your budget over the gym, eating out, fresh flowers, cosmetics and events.

Skip the nanny agencies which are notoriously unrealiable and cop a huge fee for themselves which is not a passed down to the nannies and put an ad on mom blogs, Craigslist or ask around- word of mouth is the best way to find a nanny.

No illegal aliens, no non English speakers and ideally anyone with good personal references and ECE units OVER the age of 25.
Once again I can't stress this enough-PAY TOP SALARY-you cannot ask another human being to come into your home and care for your child and then start cutting corners and nickel and diming them. Ignore peers who talk about how 'cheap' they can get childcare, that's not an ethical or healthy way to contribute to society.

Paying someone who will be kind, educational and reliable a great salary as an employer is.

15.00 to 20.00 plus per hour with absolutely no housekeeping except cleaning up after your child after meals and folding kids clothing. Do not ask them to move furniture, do your laundry, vacum or cook your food.

There are countless great nannies out there despite how many nasty stories are out there spread by vindictive parents, good luck on finding one.

Depending on the area you live in will determine the rates. I live in a small town in Washington state and I take care of two brothers and make $800 a month. That is part-time now that they are both in school now. You also need to decide if you want to deal with declaring the nanny's wages on your taxes. You might get a tax break, but if you are going to declare the wages you may have to pay more so it is worth the nanny to claim it on their taxes.
