Typically people don't just decide to be atheist because the church experience wasn't that great. It isn't the lack of good churches that would cause someone to become atheist. Most atheists have read the bible or at least have basic knowledge about it.
I'm an atheist and know that I didn't choose to be atheist because of those factors. I mean of course I thought church was boring when I was small, but it has nothing to do with the reason I disbelieve. My disbeliefs actually came from studying christianity and other religions. For those that hold religious beliefs, I find it hard to explain how you feel when you disbelieve, its kind of like coming to a realization of how ridiculous it all is (at least that is the best way I can explain it). What I mean by this is just the idea of god in general and the stories that the bible contains that look like they were pulled from some children's fairy tale book. You begin to think about the idea and it just seems so ignorant, I guess you could say, to take it seriously.

I am ruled by logic, not emotion. Some Christians try to say all atheists became atheists, due to bad experiences at some church...but that is quite wrong. It only considers one of the many reasons one might reject Christianity. I do not reject an idea, merely because I do not like it. That is immature. Likes and dislikes are totally irrelevant to finding truth. I saw errors in the Bible at age 7, and I saw ever more as I grew older and wiser. Two parts of the Bible say pi is 3.00, while it is really 3.14159+, so I cannot use the Bible for mathematics or engineering. From Genesis to Revelation, the sky is believed to be a solid dome a few miles above us that can roll up like a scroll and shake loose stars to fall to Earth. Some ancient Greeks knew more than the Bible's authors. Should one worship Aristarchus who calculated correctly that the Moon is about 240,000 miles away, not 15 or less as the Bible's authors from Alpha to Omega wrongly believed?

Some people simply have no interest in believing in god. Why is that a problem? It doesn't effect you. Go ahead and believe what you wish, but some believe differently than you. Deal with it. As for me, i'm agnostic and I don't feel I need to read some book that is thousands of years old and has been retranslated and changed around so many times that the original content cannot still be in tact. I can believe in a higher power without conforming to a particular religion. I find most if not all "religious" views on god so narrow minded and simple that it is sickening. I'm happy without a church or religious denomination in my life thanks.

I became an atheist because the bible is nonsensical. It amazes me that people in this age still believe that utter hogwash. If such events were reported today, you would dismiss them as fraud out of hand.Yet,since it's in this "special"book, you swallow insanity without question.Amazing!I have been to many, many churches,no one seemed more silly than another(Bro Branhams message church probably was more silly than most)I even went to "be healed"as an experiment. Those people don't fall, they are PULLED back.I also have read several versions of the bible. The entire concept is ludicrous,no sane person can literally believe that absolute nonsense

I'm an atheist and an ex-Catholic. Yes, I tried different religions, but I found that they all shared the same basic flaw -- appeals to metaphysical entities/ concepts for which there is no supporting evidence. I don't think Catholics are zombies, however. I see them as being no more or less deluded than many other religious people.

Ummm, I am an Atheist & in my teenage yrs. I use to deliver candles, incense, & other paraphinalia to churches of many religions & denominations, & I am here to tell you it's not just the Catholics. Bad news everywhere. I am not an Atheist because of church, I am an Atheist because I studied religions & text. Most Atheist have read the bible & more than once. I have read many bibles, translations & text, most of us have.

Atheists don't generally become atheists due to a bad church or religious experience. They become atheists because the blind dark spot in their brain, where the very idea of the religion they followed was hiding, was somehow revealed through the flashlight of reason. It is an instant conversion once that flashlight shines through. Most people never get to see that spot though.

I became an agnostic because of bad church experiences, which led me to try many different denominations.
I found one unifying reality in each denomination and that was that all churches struggle to find the will of God. It isn't clear to any of them, they fight over biblical meaning and doctrine, choose one verse over another etc...
In the end that search for God in church led me to throw down the gauntlet and call God to the table. Every Christian I had discussed my faith problems with, told me that God would reveal Himself to me. So I decided to REALLY put it to the test.
I asked God to reveal Himself to me, He didn't, and that, along with the complete lack of tangible evidence and the existence of thousands of religions, all with intangible, faith dependent gods, is why I turned from an Agnostic into an Atheist.

Okay , I'll try it . But first tell me which church does not preach the supernatural - - - that which is, by nature impossible.
Can they tell me how one guy can really be three ? Can they tell me how somebody can be his own father ? Can they give me some discription of this "soul" that they're forever talking about ? How big is it ? What color is it ? What does it look like ? Where in the body is it ? And most of all , how do you know ?

People are Atheists for far greater reason than a bad church.
Frankly all churches are bad, they serve no purpose other than giving people false hopes and praying upon their simplicity. We are all born Atheists it is up to us whether we remain so, or fall for the fairy tales.
