those cells. What does it represent and how did it get there?

This is indicating an error in a formula. It is an automated thing which checks cells in the same row and if it thinks that this cell should be the same as the ones above or beside will show as an error. If you know it is not an error right click on the cell or highlight a few cells and right click then click ignore error and it will be gone

In my version of Excel that represents a formula that affects those cells. It simply means that the value of that cell is computed by some calculation, as opposed to going to that cell and entering the data yourself. Try clicking on one of those cells with the green angle in it, then look at the "Fx" block just above the column headers (A, B, C, etc.). If something that looks like a mathematical or logic equation appears in that Fx box, you have a formula.

I'm not exactly sure, but it is most likely nothing. It might also be a problem with the number in the box. I would click on it, and see what happens.
