Is this just as good? I need something to type a paper right away, and don't have the cash to dish out for microsoft office.
Thanks

Is really hard to say if there is a better option than MS Office, but the truth is that a few programs are available and will do a great job depending on your needs and they're both free. Here i leave you two articles from very respectful magazines concerning this topic.

Open Office is really a good office suite and it is a freeware. You can download the same from www.openoffice.org. It contains 'Writer' as a word processor, 'Calc' as a spreadsheet software, 'Impress' for presentations and 'Base' for database. It is from Sun Microsystems and based on Java. Except that you don't get books in the market for Open Office, it is good. It is user friendly and you do not need any previous knowledge of the software, nor do you need to take any coaching. Help provides clarifications for all your doubts. You can right away try that.

It may not have all the features that Microsoft Office does, but for the price, you can't beat it. If you want to type a paper, it's good enough, and you can, if needed save it as a Microsoft Word document.

It is really enough good free product for home users, for the first time You won't see big difference, but when You need something more special - You might have problems. Don't be scared for that, because You will learn how to use it, and will never want to come back to ms office. Just pay attention when you will save the documents. choose the right format you need.

I guess it's pretty good and sufficient for home use. The problem arises when you try to open an Open Office program away from home or from a PC that doesn't have the program. In this case, you could convert it to Word at a free, online converter at www.media-convert.com.

ok open office is still in the developement stage so dont expect it to be as great as microsoft office but with time i am pretty sure Open office would rule.

IBM's open office is pretty nice and free and also it has better graphics, it employs the concept of tabs so that in one page you can open powerpoint excel, web pages.

here is the link to download it:
