I just saw something on the internet about St. John's Wort for depression and I just wanted to know if it is really effective and how much it cost and can it be found at Walmart? Also Sam-e, does anyone know anything about that one?

No, it doesn't work as well as other medicines. I don't think it has approval from the FDA. You'll have better luck with SSRIs. Yes, you probably can buy it at Walmart. Tell your doctor if you decide to take it as it interacts with many prescription drugs. It probably costs about the same as a multi-vitamin. The multi-vitamin would probably be more effective.

I just started taking St Johns Wort, but for anxiety. So far is seems to be working, I do feel a little more at peace. The only thing is it feels like at the point where I guess it wears off I feel very groggy. Not sure if anyone else has had this side effect? But you are supposed to take like 6 in a day, 2 in the morning, 2 afternoon and 2 at night, so once I took my next 2 again I felt better. I bought the smaller bottle to try it out but I believe it comes in 2 different size bottles and I did get it at walmart by all the vitamins and stuff and it was about $20 dollars give or take a few.

i took st johns wort for a few years for anxiety and depression, but it didnt really seem to help me. while i hear that it works wonders for mild depression, if you have more moderate or severe depression you might be better off with some other medication. but definitely try it, it might work for you!
another thing that is supposed to be helpful for depression is taking more B vitamins, so you could try taking a supplement for that as well.

side note: i was also recently told by my doctor that st johns wort can lower the efficacy of the birth control pill. so be aware of that, and let any of your girlfriends know if they are thinking about using it!

I have heard that it can be an effective mood booster and can help PMS mood swings. I have never personally tried it because there is evidence that it may reduce the effectiveness of the birth control pill. (I'd rather be a little down for a bit than down for 18+ years)

It is available in many brands at just about any store and it is not expensive.

Nope, doesn't work.
Try an anti-depressant. Cymbalta is freaking awesome! Mine started working the same day.
