I give blood regularly (I'm 20 and have given 2 gallons already). It is something very important to me. I just got a tattoo Saturday and have been wanting one for a while but knew I couldn't give blood for a year after getting the tattoo. I told one of my good friends that I was sad I couldn't give for a year and she said they check the state where you had it done to see how long you can't give for. She told me that some places you only had to wait 3 months! I give blood at the American Red Cross if that makes any difference. I live in GA and had my tattoo done in FL. Does anyone know how long you have to wait for one in FL or if there is any truth to what she said? Thanks so much!

each state is different, but when I wanted to give blood after just getting a tattoo, Red Cross stated that you would have to wait for six months. That was in California, Illinois and New Hampshire. Since I have been in different states, I think it is their recommendation across the board. Six months will give you enough time to heal and get checked to make sure you didn't catch anything from the needle.

The place to ask is at the Red Cross, or wherever you decide to donate. It's them that you have to satisfy - they enforce the rules.

And it doesn't matter what state you got the tattoo in - it's the fact that you got it. The Red Cross makes you wait because they want to be sure that you didn't pick up an infection along with the ink.

I work in the medical field and i too have given blood but there's a one year waiting period no matter what. Its just a standard form of practice and safety plus think of it this way you'll have time to regain energy and be well rested for that next time you decide to give blood. The Red Cross is really strict on their ways so they won't allow you to donate blood. Just wait it out but to make sure call your local Red Cross. Good luck.

you just need to contact your local american red cross and see what their policy is. i live in louisiana and their policy is one year UNLESS you get a tattoo from a shop that has been inspected and certified by them to be satisfactory as far as health standards go, then there is no delay in getting tattooed. (my artist used to work at one of those shops and the ARC calls and asks if the person got a tattoo there and they pull the file to confirm before allowing blood donation)

I was told that some times they never allow you to do it again. You need to check with your local chapter of the Red Cross
