I think I am going to purchase this when they get more in stock (2 weeks) for my 2 year/ 8 month old son.
He's into the tent and fort thing so this just seems perfect. However, it is a reversible bed and you can put the matress on the lower part until they are old enough to move it up to the top.
At what age would you move it to the top bunk area? (I just worry about him falling out. He's currently in a toddler bed w/ rails on the side.)

If anyone has this bed, please let me know your likes/ dislikes.

how forward is he in terms of how to hurt himself? what i'm getting at is if you say no jumping is he likely to get curious and jump to see what its all about or will he listen? if he's already in a toddler bed i'd say go with it. he's hardly likely to roll out of something like this!! i'd just be concerned about him jumping.

by the way, i love this bed too and i can't wait until he's old enough for it, but did you know they sell the canopy individually? they've got a small range of them you can attach to beds....might be a thought until he's old enough in your eyes for a bunk?

Could you take a guard rail from the bed he has now and put it up on the side of the bed he may fall out of? Just like, wedge it in there Or you could get a piece of 3/4" ply wood and sand it to where it's smooth and won't cause splinters. Take the ply wood and put it between the mattress and the side of the top bunk. You can secure it with a few small screws on the inside (whatever length that will go through the wood but not be seen on the outside). Make it high enough to where he won't fall out, but low enough to where he can see and be seen. I only suggest this because he may get up there when you don't know it and fall. Other than the slight "fall factor" I think that's an excellent bed! Really neat!

I went through this same thing a few months ago. I have two boys...ages 3 and 4. They were outgrowing their toddler beds so I wanted to buy them bunk beds. I did some research and the recommended age for children to sleep on the top bunk was 6 years old. My son is the height and built of a 7 year old but he has the mind of a four year old so I was afraid of buying this and something happening. Well, after much discussion with my husband and family members we decided to go for it. We got the bunk beds and my 3yr old slept on the bottom and we were going to have the 4yr old sleep with his brother on the bottom till he was ready to go on top. At first he was afraid to go up on the top bunk but then he finally said he was ready to go up and he wasn't scared anymore. He's been fine ever since. I think it depends on the child. I don't allow my 3 year old up there because he has no fear and he just might decide to jump off the top bunk..lol. I think you should stick with your plan and have the baby sleep on the bottom till you feel he's ready to move up. I think the bed you chose is great but make sure when you go buy it it's of good quality wood because as you know boys are rough and you want to make sure you buy something that will withstand your little man and that won't wear and tear quickly.

Once they can jump from the top bunk theyre old enough to sleep up there. Thats our rule. I think generally its like 4-5 years. Obviously they have to use the ladder, but if they can jump they can survive a fall. In theory.

Although my super advanced brother was safe up there when he was 3.

It would be a personal choice... as you know your son and we don't!! Whenever he is able to understand that he will be injured if he jumps off!! I would say 4-5 but once again I don't know your child!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!
