they say robot sex is about 5 years away....a robot so lifelike, you would be able to fall in love with it, and want to have sex with it.

they also say that by 2050 < i think> you will be able to marry your robot.

Im gay, i cant get married...and im not even ok with this. Its not a human, you shouldnt be able to marry it.

Thoughts?

The state of AI is no where near a sentient robot..When that happens I think they deserve equal rights.

Five years? I don't think so.

They've been promising flying cars for over a hundred years, and I still don't see one.

And who are 'they' that say you'll be able to marry a robot?

Presumably, marriage is something that occurs between sentient beings. Unless the robot is categorized as truly sentient, then it wouldn't be able to participate in a marriage ceremony (or enter into any other legally binding contracts). If it is classified as truly sentient, then it should be able to enter into any contracts it desires.

I don't see truly sentient robots, especially ones recognized as sentient by international law, any time soon. It's one of those things like FTL travel that currently can be found only in Star Trek and Star Wars movies.

As far as robot sex goes, we have it already. They're called dildos. Same thing.

Uh, sorry. That wasn't a piece of writing about marriage/sex with robots. That become only a evaluation for the recent NBC series "The Bionic woman." i can see how there might want to be confusion. it's going to worsen next week at the same time as Jaime Summers is going down and the in basic terms one which could want to keep her is the Energizer Bunny.

1) You can already buy a blow-up doll. "Robot sex" is already here, as far as religion is concerned. It is no different than doing it with a blow-up doll.

2) You can no more marry a robot than you can marry a blow-up doll. Computers are like screwdrivers - they can only do what a human makes them do, or causes them to do. We are not on the verge (as far as I know) of imbuing any computer with anything more advance than artificial intelligence. What many don't realize is that "artificial" intelligence is precisely what it says - something that *seems* to be intelligence, but actually is not. There is nothing like an intelligent computer, only computers programmed to *appear* intelligent, which is an entirely different thing.

Whatever, really. People do all sorts of weird crap.

I remember a story several years back of a woman who married her reflection.

Would the robots be into getting married anyhow? Or would they realize that it's pretty much a losing gamble, half of all marriages end in divorce and of the other half, lots of those should have ended in divorce?

I don't think marriage should be reserved for a specific group of people. It's not an exclusive club only for straight couples.
I honestly don't really know what to think about the robot thing. Aren't we all just robots anyway though?

i really doubt it will be able to fool you into thinking its a real human as its functions would be very limited. im a computer scientist and it would have to run of an emulator which would have to be preprogramed and therefore only carry some funtions

Sounds to me like having sex with and wanting to get married to a blow up doll.

It's going to take a lot more than 5 years, unless you're thinking of something like the RealDoll....
