One of the good things about practicing solitary is that you can do that which feels most appropriate to you. If you are in a coven or group you may not have the option but if you are solitary try out all the ways and see what feels right and works best for you.
If you really want to experiment with it when you are doing your chants do one of each way and see how it feels, what feels like it works better.

I'd have to say that if it is an original chant then do whatever feels natural. I started with ones I had discovered through various sources and always tried to follow whatever instructions came with them. As I branched into my own I pretty much sing them, but I am a musically inclined person anyhow. So just do what feels right.

Two definitions of the word "chant" from dictionary.com.

1. a short, simple melody, esp. one characterized by single notes to which an indefinite number of syllables are intoned, used in singing psalms, canticles, etc., in church services.

7. a phrase, slogan, or the like, repeated rhythmically and insistently, as by a crowd.

It cannot be a "chant" unless it is spoken or sung. In Wicca, it's purpose in Circle is to aid in building energy. Here is a favorite chant of mine that is repeated over and over while it is sung.

Earth is my body

Water my blood

Air is my breath

And fire my spirit!

I hope this helps you! Blessed Be.

If you're practicing solitary, it's really up to you -- whichever method you find helps you connect with the chant most powerfully. If you're in a group setting, I'd recommend singing them, or at least speaking them with a strong rythym.

If you wrote the chant- do it the way you wrote it.

IF you didn't write it, follow the directions.

the only conformity with any ritual is how it conforms to your own perception. do it in whatever way is more meaningful to you.
