I do so many outside weddings, in back yards, at parks they are wonderful! If your seating is close together, a semi circle works well, you may not need to be mic'd. You can burn yourself a cd of the music you want, get a portable player and have someone press the on button! It works! If your guest list is getting bigger and bigger, check out local music stores, they usually have small PA systems that will do the trick, make sure they have all the mic's and stands. I use a Pevey Messenger, works like a charm. The cd player even plugs in to this small system. DJ's in a small wedding seem to take over the place, if you are looking for intimate, smaller wedding...you just might want to have that small portable player belting out all your music. Best Wishes, Chaplain Debby

You can always rent a nice little PA system, or karoke machine and have a friend play the bridal march songs and the first dance song for you. Have them practice dimming the sound in and out during the rehearsal dinner..
And if you have a laptop with itunes on it, you can make a playlist and hook the computer up to the PA system and just have it play continuously.
Thats what we did, and it worked great. We had almost 200 people at our wedding and it was nice to be able to click on a song and change it just like that - people really liked it..and the music played continuously. Saved us about $1000 for no dj.

You can choose to use an ipod, small cd/ stereo/boombox or a laptop with a remote control that someone in your wedding party can discreetly control. Your officiant may have one you can use or rent. You can also ask a friend or family member to sing acapella. It is tasteful and romantic.
Depending on your budget you can get a professional solo musician or a small musical trio. Since this is your wedding, remember the choice is yours.
Decide how you want to remember your day and then check your budget and lastly ....go for it! Whatever you decide will be a reflection of your taste and no one else's. Good luck!

With Ipods and being able to burn CD, DJs are more of a luxury.
If you are having an evening formal reception, then a DJ to get the guests up and dancing is a must.
Outside of that, use an MP3 player, a laptop attached to speakers, or just a boom box, etc.
Then you can have cues set up and assign the job of someone to just hit "play."

You don't NEED anything. How long is the reception? How many is "family and immediate family"? If it's more than 50 I'd say a dj, or a radio with an ipod or something in the background would be nice.

You don't need a DJ or a wedding song. all you need for a wedding is a bride, a groom, an officiate/judge/notary and witnesses.
If you want music and a song just for you too, have someone bring a stereo outside and put the CD in and start the track you want to have your dance too.

if you don't want a DJ or string quartet, you can buy wedding music pre-recorded on CD or have no music (not mandatory - I've done weddings where there was no 'entrance' so no need for music. It depends on what you want for your ceremony.)
Congrats & good luck.
PS: Posters - please go easy on the "have a Notary Public do your ceremony" lines. That is only legal in THREE states!

No. You could hire someone to play a harp which is lovely and romantic.

ok first of all it's a wedding. If you can afford it and you want something elegant. do a string quartet. I saw that someone wrote just get an ipod and a radio. That's very low brow. I'm just trying to help
