Okay, I'm really passionate about helping fight global warming. What would be a good career for me to consider where I could help this cause?

Then realize the debate won't be there forever and is not a mean to act.

To act, you need to have knowledge in following fields:
- business and economics
- energy, chemistry, thermodynamics
- mechanical / process / power electronics engineering

I would add to this list good writing and presentation skills

I would especially recommend renewable energy technologies.

- foreign languages (most emission reduction projects take place in spanish or chinese speaking countries)

There's many different careers you could consider depending on just what you want to do. Do you, for example, want to have a detailed understanding of global warming and all it's causes and effects, would you like to contribute to the research that others use, or perhaps you want to work on finding solutions? If it's the latter there are many ways in which you can do this.

At the centre of global warming are the climatologists, it's their job to understand what's happened, what is happening and what will happen; they deal with the how's, what's when's why's etc and basically have a broad understanding of all aspects of global warming and climate in general. They aren't experts in specialist areas and most work alongside other people who have specific skills.

When it comes to fighting global warming, this is something that is being approached by many different branches of science and involves astronomers, biologists, botanists, paleoclimatologists, chemists, physicists, marine biologists, environmental scientists, hydrologists, oceanagraohers, glaciologists, and many people from areas you might not immediately associate with global warming such as engineers, economists, mathematicians, statisticians, cartographers, surveyors.

The one thing that all these careers have in common is a scientific and mathematical background. If you develop a broad base in these subjects now it should stand you in good stead for when you're ready to go to university. Maths will almost certainly be an entry requirement then depending just what you want to do you'll need qualifications from biology, physics, chemistry, computer studies, geography, geology etc.

If you want to get involved with fighting global warming at a hands on level you'll need a degree, without one you'll be restricted to assisting and conducting limited research. A noirmal BSc (or BA where it applies) will get you in at ground level, you can then progress based on your experience but having an MSc or Phd will mean you progress faster.

I got into climatology many years ago and graduated from Uni College London after getting in with 4 A levels (don't know what they're called in the US, they're the exams you take at 18) in maths, physics, chemistry and something called general studies. Back then it was perhaps easier to get into climatology as it was something of a fringe science with a smaller proportion of people going for the places available (when I enrolled the course was over-subscribed by 3 to 1, today it's something like 7 to 1 so you'll need good grades - the situation may be different in the US).

A lot of the work that's been done now in fighting global warming involves the use of science, at the moment chemistry and physics are perhaps the frontrunners. However, it's developing quite rapidly and in recent years the role of biologist and maring biologists has become more important.

Hope this helps, feel free to email should you have any other questions.
