Christianity doesn't function..it is a belief not a political system It is a belief that has survived persecution from the very beginning. It has survived through times of peace. Are you confusing governments and intuitions with Christianity. Christianity was not Spain, the Inquisitions, It was not the Vatican, or the Crusades...any more than Atheism was Stalin killing so many.

We tend to forget that history repeats itself. Did not the Conservatives and Liberals in Christ's day, though they were at each other's throat continually, unite in the end to fight Christ, their common enemy? Yes, they did.
I predict that both Conservatives and Liberals, both in the church and in government, will, in these last days, unite to fight a common enemy: Those who keep the commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus.
"Here is the patience of the saints; here are they who keep the commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus.... And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ." Revelation 14:12; 12:17.

Supposedly Satan is our common enemy, but we all manage to screw that one up on an hourly basis.
But with where I think you were actually going with your question, common 'enemies' unite us better, but don't necessarily make us act more Christ-like--quite the opposite much of the time.

SCAPEGOATING = A tactic often employed is to characterize an entire group of individuals according to the unethical or immoral conduct of a small number of individuals belonging to that group, also known as guilt by association. The Jews were singled out in Nazi propaganda during the 20th century. The Muslims are scheduled for the 21st century.
"The efficiency of the truly national leader consists primarily in preventing the division of the attention of the people, and always in concentrating it on a single enemy." Adolf Hitler, in "Mein Kampf".

No. God doesn't need the enemy to be God.
(Nor does his family need the enemy)
Since when did anyone ever need to evil to be good?

i think it also function better if one believes that it was only 6000 years ago that earth was created and also that we are living in the end times. it makes things more real.
