I have an 11 year old son who goes to the bathroom very frequently when we are in at restaurants, weddings, etc. He does not do this when we are at home, or when he is at school. He does not wake up in the middle of the night to go either. He claims he has to go badly everytime and that he is going a lot. Has anyone else had this issue with their children? I find it hard to believe that anyone would have to go the bathroom 9 times in 4 hours like he recently did at a wedding.

I tell everyone that my daughter feels that it is her personal mission to visit every restaurant bathroom in the country one day. Even if she goes before we leave the house, she will still have to go when we get to the restaurant. This is the same child that can go on a 5 hour car trip and not have to stop. She is 8, and I think kids are just curious about new bathrooms. Your son might also be bored, especially at the wedding.

It is called embarrassment. He is at the age when being seen with mother in public is an agonising experience which does have a stimulating effect on the bladder. It is a phase he is going through which he will probably get over, either when.....

a) He is taller than you.
or
b) He is married with children of his own.

For goodness sake pretend not to notice, and really try not to do anything that might just conceiveably draw attention to yourself while he is in your company. This will simply make his embarrassment even more profound.

Don't feel that he doesn't love you, or that he is ashamed. It is just the way that little boys are. He needs some distance between you while he becomes a man.

I would suggest keeping an eye on this. He could be drinking more than normal, causing the additional need to go, or there could be a medical issue. My son has had to go, and gone 3 times while brushing his teeth! We are investigating the possibility that his bladder is not emptying completely when he goes. There are many possibilities. If it continues, have it checked out by the doctor just to be on the safe side.

Your son could be going for several reasons.

1. Maybe he is just bored, (it is hard for a child to sit still or stand around with adults for a long time) and says he has to go just to be able to get up and move around.

2. Maybe he gets nervous in crowds and just wants to get away somewhere quiet.

3. Maybe he like to go in the bathroom and play around with the water and just mess with stuff. (one of my boys was always messing with something he shouldn't have been)

As long as he doesn't complain about pain when urinating or someone else doesn't complain to you that he is throwing water in the bathroom, you shouldn't worry about it.

Keep in mind that at weddings and events, there are usually unlimited supplies of soft drinks for the kids, and it's easy for them to over do it, especially when the adults are socializing and not keeping a close eye on them. I suspect this is what's causing his frequent trips to the bathroom.

When I was little, I used to always beg my mom to go to the bathroom when we were out because she would have me out for hours and I was bored out of my mind.
I did it so she would finally have to leave wherever we were to find a bathroom and hopefully we wouldn't go back because I was being such a pain the butt and then we could just go home.
She caught on after a while though and when I really had to go she didn't believe me.

Maybe he is bored. Children get bored at adult events and the bathroom is the only place they can really go. He probably just wants to see what else is going on.

first of all, is the child actually going? i'm assuming u've checked and have found that he is. this is not unusual for people who have this problem. i've been dealing with it for 25 years. the first time it was brought to my attention was in my early 20's and my roommates counted me going 7 times in ONE HOUR. stress causes it. is it #1 or #2? i have both problems. i started going to a doctor who practices this technique and it's the only thing that has worked. i've had all kinds of surgeries and medications to no avail. off of all medication. i only go when i start having problem again, which is always due to stress. it is real, and believe me, it's harder on him than it is on you. get him into yoga to learn how to relax and couseling to deal with rage. best wishes.

Is your son shy or nervous in public? Anxiety could be a reason as well.
