I would say that depends entirely on what city you happen to be in when you dial 911. You will get the best your city has to offer. Are you considering moving or are you looking for a job with "the best"?

Personal opinion only, but based on history I'd probably say the NYPD.
LAPD has screwed up many high profile criminal cases by either poor training, poor supervision, poor management, or really dumb police officers (Melendez Brothers, O.J. Simpson, Black Dahlia, Charles Manson to name a few).
LAPD has had a seriously negative relationship with the minorities --Watts Riots, Rodney King, etc.

So, all in all, I'd suggest NYPD

Well, if the media reflects reality, let's look at the media portrayals of each.

NYPD used to be portrayed on "Car 54 Where Are You", but that's given way to all the spinoffs of Law and Order.

LAPD used to be "Dragnet" and "Adam 12", but now it's "Beverly Hills Cop" and sequels.

If the media has any credibility, it's obviously NYPD.

But, since they don't, they're probably relatively equal, within their own spheres and problems to deal with.

Depends on what your defination of "overall" means. Do you mean in terms of benefits? Promotibility, Population to Officer ratio? After assignments in patrol and specialized detective units and speaking with friends on the NYPD, my feeling is that LAPD is still better.

NYPD rules. LAPD sides with illegals, schmooze up to gang bangers and drug dealers.

LAPD has the highest number of police fatalities than any other dept. They avg. one life per day. Pretty scary, huh. I wouldn't want to work there.

Neither. Both meets the needs of very different communities that have very different expectations of their police services. Neither is better, they are just different.
