When skin is damaged epithelial tissues are damaged.

The skin protects underlying muscles and organs from possible damages caused by pathogens by acting as a barrier to protect against infection.Langerhans cells in the skin are also part of the adaptive immune system.

As the skin contain many nerve endings, it could perceive different sensations thus could quickly react to pull back from any damaging factors such as heat, cold, and other factors that can lead to injury.

The function of the skin in heat regulation and evaporation control also help in preventing possible damages caused by severe loss of heat and fluids.

The skin also contains melanin pigments which could protect damages from ultraviolet radiation. However, exposure to UV rays more than its protective capacity could not prevent the damages from sunburn.
